Drive and Thrive: Key Takeaways from the 2024 FORS Conference

We had the pleasure of attending the 7th Annual FORS Conference at the ICC in Birmingham yesterday, and it was an inspiring day full of insights for the transport and logistics industry. With a focus on resilience, sustainability, and fleet safety, the event brought together industry experts to discuss strategies that will shape the future of road transport operations.

Here are some of the most important highlights:

1. Driving Business Resilience & Thriving in a Competitive Market

The conference opened with an insightful update from Geraint Davies, FORS Concession Director, and Glen Davies, FORS Technical Advisor, discussing strategies to help businesses thrive amidst the challenges of today’s logistics landscape. This included key changes in Version 7 of the FORS Standard, which will further refine safety and operational best practices.

2. Going Green: Decarbonisation in the Transport Sector

Sustainability took centre stage this year, with panels led by industry experts like Kate Armitage and Amber Geggus, exploring the why, when, and how of decarbonising fleets. Operators were encouraged to consider electric trucks, renewable fuels like HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), and the infrastructure needed to support a greener future. The conversation emphasised that while the electrification of vehicles is complex, it is an essential step for reducing emissions across the sector.

3. The Human Factor in Fleet Safety

Dr. Lisa Dorn from Cranfield University presented a compelling study on driver behavior and fleet safety. Her research highlighted the significant impact of stress and cognitive overload on drivers’ decision-making processes and how operators can take proactive steps to mitigate these risks, ensuring safer journeys for everyone on the road.
