The drug pronunciation series continues!

Sometimes, I feel like I'm the Hermione Granger of drug pronunciations. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Hermione corrects Ron on the pronunciation of the levitation spell, "Wingardium Leviosa."  She says, "It's leviOsa, not levioSA!" I may not correct people like Hermione, but I do try to get the right spoken and written pronunciations out there and provide evidence for each one.

Any drug name is easier to pronounce with the correct written and spoken pronunciations. I created the drug pronunciation series (and online course) to help people from all walks of life say drug names. My goal is to help my podcast audience (and my students) sound more confident saying drug names and feel less frustrated learning them. The most popular episodes remain the semaglutide (219) and metoprolol (177) episodes.

Saying drug names correctly projects professionalism, builds trust, and improves safety. Let's face it, when we say a drug name the wrong way, patients and other healthcare professionals notice. It makes them question if we know what we're talking about. Conversely, if someone mispronounces a drug name when phoning in a prescription, we as pharmacists, may question their credibility.

Fake Rx's can be easy to "spot" because criminals often mispronounce drug names.

For anyone hearing drug names spoken for the fist time, like students and my international audience (who may be learning English as a second language) the pronunciation series is especially helpful. I have tens of thousands of downloads in more than 60 countries.

I released the 41st episode in my drug pronunciation series today. Some people say "uh-ZITH-roe-MYE-sin." Others say "ay-ZITH-roe-MYE-sin." Which way is the right way, and what's my source? Find out in Episode 301 of The Pharmacist's Voice ® Podcast .

I break down azithromycin and Zithromax into syllables, tell you which syllables to emphasize, and share my sources. The written pronunciations are helpful. Find them in the show notes for episode 301 on thepharmacistsvoice.com/podcast.

I've always said a long A for azithromycin. Which one is it?
