Dubai Hotels: Leading the Way in Sustainable Luxury
Dubai, a city that needs no introduction for its luxury and extravagance, is also making significant strides towards sustainability. The city's hospitality and tourism sectors are at the forefront of a green revolution, demonstrating that lavishness can coexist with eco-consciousness. This article explores how Dubai's hotels are redefining luxury through sustainable practices.
Dubai's Commitment to Sustainability
As the global emphasis on sustainability intensifies, the UAE's extended Year of Sustainability in 2024 underscores Dubai’s commitment to becoming an exemplary city for living and visiting. Building on the momentum from hosting COP28, Dubai is now focused on solidifying its position as a world-leading sustainable destination. This involves preserving the city's rich cultural heritage and pioneering advancements in sustainable hospitality and eco-tourism.
In 2021, the Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST) initiative introduced a comprehensive set of 19 sustainability criteria that all hotels in the city must meet. These standards addressed various sustainability aspects, including environmental management, resource conservation, social responsibility, and guest engagement. To date, 70 hotels have received the DST Stamp across all classifications, showcasing the highest level of adherence to Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism 's Sustainability Requirements.
The Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) also launched the Carbon Calculator which actively tracks the industry's carbon emissions. So far 500+ hotels in Dubai enter data monthly to measure their carbon footprint.
Furthermore, knowing the negative environmental consequences of disposable water bottles, DET set in motion the Dubai Can Initiative that promotes reusable water bottles and a "refill for life" culture. To support this, community water filtration stations were established at various locations in Dubai including Media One Hotel and Four Points by Sheraton Sheikh Zayed Road and Bur Dubai . So far, over 200 hotels in Dubai have adopted sustainable practices by either installing bottling plants, or bottle-free dispensers and an additional 170 hotels are actively transitioning to plastic-free operations.
How Dubai Hotels are Leading the Sustainability Charge
Jumeirah Al Naseem
Jumeirah Al Naseem, like all the hotels in Madinat Jumeirah, demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability. The luxury resort complex prioritizes recycling, water conservation, reducing single-use plastics, preventing food waste, and conserving energy throughout its facilities. However, what sets Jumeirah Al Naseem apart is its specially designed lagoon, which is part of Jumeirah 's Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project (DTRP).
This sanctuary not only provides care for sick and injured turtles but also raises awareness about the dangers these marine creatures face. Since its inception in 2004, the DTRP has partnered with Dubai's Wildlife Protection Office and received support from Dubai’s Royal Family and the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory, successfully releasing over 2,150 rehabilitated turtles back into the wild.
To celebrate 20 years of DTRP, Jumeirah Al Naseem is offering a Turtled-Inspired Stay Experience allowing guests to engage with ocean conservation efforts firsthand. From turtle-inspired welcome amenities to a behind-the-scenes tour of the project's remarkable work, every detail of this experience is crafted to provide an unforgettable and meaningful stay. Additionally, a portion of the stay rate is donated to DTRP, and guests can track the journeys of released turtles via a map link.
Bab Al Shams Resort
Established in 2004, Bab Al Shams Desert Resort is one of the longest-running desert resorts in Dubai, modelled after an Arabian fort. Blending traditional and modern elements, the resort's architecture makes for an Arabian oasis with lavish comforts. Having undergone a renovation in 2023, the property prioritizes sustainability in a way that goes beyond trendy initiatives.
A key aspect of the Bab Al Shams renovation involved reusing as many items as possible from the original property. This eco-approach has been highly successful, with repurposed, refurbished, and reupholstered pieces blending seamlessly with new elements to create a fresh look. Additionally, The Bab Al Shams Spa & Hammam curates experiences in collaboration with eco-conscious brands dedicated to natural, organic, and sustainable products. This includes De L’Arta, Bamford, Whind, and Maison d’Asa.

The resort is committed to reducing water and energy usage and minimizing food waste. Certified by Eco Luxury Retreats of the World, Al Maha also actively works to preserve the nation’s cultural heritage through research initiatives and the acquisition of local artefacts.
Anantara The Palm
Anantara Hotels & Resorts is a luxury hotel group with a strong commitment to sustainable growth, and Anantara The Palm is among its properties that have earned Green Growth Certification from the Green Growth 2050 Council.
The hotel has made significant efforts to reduce its energy consumption by installing LED lighting throughout the property, optimizing the operation of its chilled water systems, and limiting the operating hours of high-intensity equipment. Anantara The Palm is also actively working to decrease its use of plastics. One of the first steps taken was replacing plastic keycards with paper alternatives, followed by the elimination of plastic drink stirrers and straws.
JA The Resort
Among the city's most eco-friendly options, JA The Resort ( JA Resorts & Hotels ) in Jebel Ali, comprising three hotels, has made substantial efforts to minimize its environmental impact. The resort predominantly meets its hot water requirements—covering pools and guest rooms—through solar water heating, a highly efficient form of renewable energy.
The resort also manages its own desalination and sewage treatment facilities, which together supply fresh water and irrigation for the property. Additional sustainability measures include a tree planting campaign and an on-site bottling plant that supplies guests with complimentary water in reusable bottles.
Andaz The Palm
At the stunning Andaz Dubai The Palm , the on-site dining venues, such as The Locale and the Tokyo-inspired Hanami, feature dishes made from fresh organic greens cultivated right at the hotel.
