Duo de Basilio. English version.
Duo de Basilio.
English version.
In 2016, when Serge Fourton and Basilio Izquierdo were named
Exceptional Winemakers on the 50th anniversary of the Bordeaux
Winemakers Association, María Izquierdo proposed
that they make an “Authors Wine” at Basilio’s Winery in Rioja.
The two Winemakers accepted the challenge of creating an excellent
wine in Rioja, only with the native grape varieties: Tempranillo, Garnacha,
Graciano, Maturana and Mazuela.
The challenge took the two Bordeaux school oenologists
three years of reflection, aiming to create an original blend
with great ageing potential.
Each grape variety was vinified separately to make a complex wine.
The two authors contributed all their experience to each combination.
It was with the 2019 vintage that they both agreed on their criteria:
an original high-quality wine with highly mature tannins.
2019 is the vintage chosen to present the first copy of the family:
Duo de Basilio.
VINEYARDS ANND GRAPES:
Tempranillo, Grenache, Graciano, Maturana and Mazuela
over 40 years old from Rioja Alta. Grapes selected
in the vineyard and harvested manually in 15 kg crates.
The vines belong to farmers with assisted contracts
and with whom we have had a relationship for more than ten years.
WEATHER CONDITIONS:
The fall was warm with little frost. The leaves were slow to fall,
which favored the accumulation of reserves in the plants.

Bud burst took place in early April and flowering in early June.
Fruit set was irregular and the bunches
had enough space to avoid the appearance of botrytis during
ripening. Ripening started in the last days of July.
During the first half of September, 34 liters were recorded
which delayed the start of the harvest, which took place on October 11.
There was good ripening given the small size of the grains and clusters.
The harvest was characterized by low pH and high acidity.
VINIFICATION:
After destemming, fermentation took place in stainless steel
tanks and 6HL barrels with maximum temperatures of 30ºC.
Daily tastings were made until devatting.
Each grape variety was vinified separately.
The malolactic fermentation took place in new French oak
barrels where it continued to mature for 24 months.
10 barrels were selected from 40 with high potential,
to proceed to the final blending and bottling.
Duo can be described as a “new approach to Rioja wines of great tradition.”
