New Single Permit Directive

The new EU Single Permit Directive will come into force on May 20, 2024. Under the new Single Permit Directive, foreigners will be issued work and residence permits under a simplified procedure. The Social Security and Migration Ministry of Spain said that more favorable rules would apply to workers from other countries.

Foreigners can now obtain a permit that acts both as a residence and work permit without undergoing prolonged and strict procedures. The new EU Single Permit Directive will introduce simplified procedures for single permits with an unemployment period.

Foreign workers can now stay in the country longer if they remain unemployed. Another important change was that third-country nationals can apply for a single permit without leaving an EU member state, provided that they already live and hold a residence permit in that state.

New Directive Improves Protection of Workers against Exploitation

The new single permit directive will also improve the protection of foreign workers against exploitation. The member states cannot impose more restrictive rules on the rights and working conditions of foreign workers. Moreover, every member state must ensure that foreign workers are treated equally as EU workers.

Once the new directive is effective, the EU member states will have two years to make all the necessary changes to their national laws.

I currently hold a single residence and work permit tied to my previous employer. Unfortunately, due to a reduction in workload, the company had to lay off employees, including myself. As a result, I am actively seeking new employment opportunities. I am specifically looking for positions that offer work permit sponsorship, as the companies I've applied to so far are unwilling to hire me because my residence permit is linked to my former employer. Could you please let me know if these new changes might positively affect my situation?
