412th Medical Group

Whether we are Increasing readiness for the next earthquake, hurricane, wildfire, or combat operation, we know that medical services will be required. In a protracted conflict or emergency, the entire region around Edwards AFB may be impacted and have to pull together to handle various medical emergencies. Recently senior leaders from the 412th Medical Group on Edwards AFB, including the group’s commander, Col. Mary Carnduff, met with senior leaders from Adventist Health in Tehachapi to learn about each other’s capabilities and how best to cooperate during emergencies. This meeting is meant to be the first of many with medical facilities and leaders throughout the region.

Warriors of the Week

412th Test Wing deputy commander Col. James Hayes presents the commander’s excellence coin to the wing’s Warriors of the Week – the 412th Test Engineering Group’s new-employee onboarding team comprised of 812th Test Support Squadron members Kristen Burks, (left/top), Jenny Gatton (middle), Tong Lin and Arlinda Miller (not shown). Hayes said the team developed “a revolutionary, comprehensive two-week onboarding program” for new hires, providing unity of effort across the group’s five squadrons in support of more than 100 new employees during the past six months. Their program incorporates basic knowledge of government employment with an introduction to Air Force culture, base-wide facilities and operations, the flight test enterprise and technical disciplines, among other topics.  (Photos by Mike Paoli)

🔁 Project Arc (Apply no later than Nov. 5)

"Give me your tinkerers, your dreamers, your hidden geeks yearning to build, the amateur hobbyists awake in the dark hours disassembling their cars and computers. Give me those that don't care if they get the credit as long as the job gets done. Give me those that will find 2,000 ways not to make a lightbulb, those that won't give up, that will crawl up the mud-slicked hill in the rain so that America's light will continue to blaze freedom throughout the world."

AFWERX, in partnership with the Air Force Chief Scientist’s Office (AF/ST), is looking to embed uniformed Scientists, Technologists, and Engineers (STEs) into operational units to deliver asymmetric technological advantages in the battle space against near-peer competitors. Selected Airmen and Guardians will be collocated with operational Wings scattered throughout the globe to demonstrate the ability of STEs to address operational problems, rapidly exploit and adapt technology, and accelerate change in the operations domain. This immersive 6-month program provides Airmen and Guardians the opportunity to flaunt their technical talent, work on their passions, and push their abilities beyond the operational edge of today’s warfighters. Those selected will be expected to perform hands-on experimentation and prototyping side-by-side with pilots, logisticians, maintainers, battlefield, and ISR Airmen.

✈️ Designation of Beneficiary forms are not required but if submitted, should be reviewed annually.

Designation of Beneficiary forms are not required but if submitted, should be reviewed annually, and new forms submitted as needed. If you do not designate a beneficiary, your benefits will be paid according to the established order of precedence in the event of your death. Significant life events (such as marriage, death, divorce, or birth) do not automatically update your designations. As such, it is highly recommended you review your designations yearly in addition to when you have a life changing event and complete new forms when necessary. If you have a valid designation of beneficiary on file, it will be in your electronic Official Personnel Folder (eOPF) at https://eopf.opm.gov/USAF. For more information regarding beneficiary forms, please review the "Beneficiary Forms Information" knowledge article on myFSS: https://myfss.us.af.mil/USAFCommunity/s/knowledge-detail?pid=kA0t0000000wkzfCAA.

The well-being and readiness of our service members is a top priority for the Defense Department. Over the past three years, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III has taken action on issues critical to force and family stability, including securing affordable basic needs, making moves easier, strengthening support to families and expanding spousal employment. As of Sept. 13, 2024, the Secretary has ordered additional concrete steps to provide tangible support to our force and to tackle pressing problems our people face. The new actions are sourced directly from service members' experiences and will further ensure the well-being and success of our force, so they can focus on their mission. For more information, visit the Military One Source website (https://www.militaryonesource.mil/financial-legal/personal-finance/taking-care-of-people/)

✈️ Show what your job entails to students

WHAT: Is your organization interested in hosting a FIELD TRIP to 28-35 STARBASE students for an hour and a half to share insights about your career field? We will provide the transportation (school buses) to students.

and/or Is your organization interested in SPEAKING to 28-35 STARBASE students for 30 minutes about your career field? Ideally, you will come to STARBASE, so students won’t need transportation.

WHO: STARBASE is a DoD program that provides a five-day hands-on STEM curriculum for 5th graders across the nation. The curriculum includes field trips to other organizations on base, as well as speeches from DoD employees, military and civilian, working on STEM career fields.

WHY: 1) The main goal is to make STEM-focused careers real and authentic for students. 2) Your field trips and speeches are the highlight of the STARBASE experience for students and, honestly, for our instructors as well! 3) Research shows us that if students can name and describe a STEM career that they might be interested in by 7th grade, their chance of going to college for a STEM degree goes up by roughly 65%.

HOW: It’s totally up to you! As an example, the Fire Station Team separated students into small groups and moved them through stations where they learned about the different aspects of the fire station.

CONTACT: Dr. Samantha Duchscherer, Director of STARBASE Edwards, at samantha.duchscherer@us.af.mil

WHEN: FIELD TRIP sessions are available on the dates highlighted in BLUE. SPEAKING sessions are available on the dates highlighted in YELLOW.

On October 31, 1986, Secretary of the Air Force Edward C. Aldridge, Jr., announced that teams headed by Lockheed and by Northrop would proceed to the demonstration and validation (DEM/VAL) phase for the airframe of the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF). At the same time, General Electric and Pratt & Whitney would proceed with the development of prototype engines. The ATF was to be the next-generation air superiority (or counter-air) fighter to counter opposing fighters such as the MiG-29 and the Su-27.  The program led to the development of the YF-22 Raptor and YF-23 Black Widow II that flew off at Edwards in the 1990s.  The Air Force eventually selected the Raptor for development into the F-22.Linkhttps://www.af.mil/About-Us/Fact-Sheets/Display/Article/104506/f-22-raptor/
