Effective treatment of early allergic and late inflammatory symptoms of allergic rhinitis with Ze 339 (Tesalin®)

Introduction: Tesalin® n (Ze 339) is indicated for the treatment of symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay-fever) as well as related symptoms in eyes, nose and throat. Its efficacy was confirmed in numerous clinical studies. In the latest publication the excellent efficacy of Tesalin® n in the treatment of nasal congestion, an example for the late inflammatory symptoms of allergic rhinitis, was once more confirmed.

Aim: To confirm the efficacy and safety of P. hybridus leaf extract Ze 339 in patients suffering from allergic rhinitis under naturalistic conditions.

Method: Positive votes of the local ethics committees were obtained before physicians were recruited. Patients were obliged to sign an informed consent form and the patients' data were recorded anonymously. For each patient three visits were planned. The second visit was planned to take place 2 – 4 weeks after the first visit. A third visit should be conducted 2 – 4 months after the second visit.

Results: In this study 228 patients were included by 63 physicians. For 205 patients a visit 2 was recorded. Two-thirds of these patients (139/67.8%) were treated with 2 tablets P. hybridus leaf extract Ze 339 from visit 1 on. Less frequently, patients were treated with 3 tablets (39/19.0%) and 1 tablet (27/13.2%) daily. On all 3 visits 13 symptoms of allergic rhinitis (5 allergic symptoms, 3 inflammatory symptoms, 5 symptoms of quality of life) were evaluated. All 13 symptoms were statistically significant reduced (p < 0.001, Figure 1). Furthermore, the Total Symptom Score (TSS) of the 5 allergic symptoms (rhinorrhoea, nasal congestion, nasal itching, sneezing, eye itching) was statistically significant reduced (p < 0.001).

Conclusion: The efficacy of P. hybridus leaf extract Ze 339 for the treatment of early allergic and late inflammatory symptoms of allergic rhinitis could be confirmed. The physicians and patients were very satisfied with the treatment and the concept of the therapy.
