The effects of Covid on the hospitality sector...
By Kelly Reading, Sales Team Manager.
As lockdown eases, more people are beginning to return to weekends of dining out, impromptu drinks after work and meeting up with friends.
When Covid first hit there were mass redundancies in the hospitality sector, because lockdowns are designed to prevent people from socialising. But what happens once things reopen? Do all of the staff who were initially made redundant or furloughed return to their jobs? After the challenges they’ve been through and the damage done to the hospitality sector, the future is certainly not clear.
According to the BBC, hospitality venue owners say that they are already experiencing a large jump in demand from customers, but the staff shortage that they are experiencing means that they may have to limit opening hours. This of course poses a big problem for the UK’s economic recovery.
Could the UK have foreseen the hospitality shortage?
Many companies employ staff from countries across Europe but since the advent of Covid, many of those people have returned back to their home countries or taken up jobs outside of the Hospitality sector.
The perfect storm of Brexit followed by Covid has resulted in a situation that the UK’s hospitality sector has never seen and is struggling to recover from.
There are a number of reasons why the UK could be facing this problem. The hospitality sector is notorious for long working hours and low pay. Since lockdown, people have realised the value of spending more time with family and have found jobs that have a better work / life balance, meaning some are now reluctant to return to their old hospitality jobs.
I have a number of manufacturing clients who are looking to hire in excess of 500 people to satisfy customer demand. They are struggling to source the staff themselves through traditional recruitment methods, so they are having to broaden their horizons and consider using different ways of hiring staff, because their usual recruitment methods are no longer sufficient to attract the volumes of candidates required.
Maybe the hospitality sector needs to follow suit?
