Modernization experience of Feed Water Pumps of the Kostroma Power Plant

With a team of authors from Inter RAO - Electric Power Plants, the biggest power generating company in Russia, we published the article “Modernization experience of Feed Water Pumps of the Kostroma Power Plant” in the Magazine "Electric Power Plants" (see link).

The original Article was published in Russian. An English translation will be published in the magazine "Power Technology and Engineering" (Springer Verlag) soon.

This article describes the experiences of the two-stage modernization of all turbine-driven Feed Water Pumps at the Kostroma Power Plant. Specifically, it illustrates the engineering development, optimization, and successful implementation and operation of the equipment with high levels of reliability. The long-term maintenance-free operation of the Feed Water Pumps demonstrated the achievement of all tasks and targets set by the power plant's management. Therefore, the Power Plant operating staff was able to concentrate on the performance of their main task - the generation of electricity with the highest degree of efficiency and availability factor.

The modernization of the Feed Water Pumps allowed for an increase in the efficiency of the pump from 80 to 86,5% on the 1200 MW Power Unit and from 77 to 85,7% on the 300 MW Power Units, which in turn led to a decrease in the specific consumption of conventional fuel for the production of 1 kW*h at a nominal load of 0,712 g.

The annual equivalent fuel saving in tons of specific fuel on a 300 MW Power Unit No. 2 at nominal load is

ΔВ = Δв * N nom * Ƭ = 0,712 * 300000 * 2750 = 587400000 ≈ 587,4 tons of specific fuel / year
