EfficiencyIT Reduces Data Centre Power Consumption at Wellcome Sanger Institute
EfficiencyIT , a UK-based specialist in data centres and critical communications environments, has completed a major digital transformation project for the Wellcome Sanger Institute, a world leader in genomic research.
The initiative focused on improving energy efficiency, resilience, and visibility across the institute’s 4.5MW data centre, which is among the largest privately owned research facilities in Europe.
Enhancing Computational Power with Sustainable Technology
The collaboration between EfficiencyIT and the Wellcome Sanger Institute Institute leveraged Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure IT Advisor, a cutting-edge data centre infrastructure management (DCIM) software, alongside over 300 custom-designed APC Rack Power Distribution Units (PDU) systems.
Through advanced data analytics, machine learning, and intelligent power monitoring, the institute achieved a remarkable 33% reduction in energy consumption. This was accomplished despite rising energy costs, positioning the Wellcome Sanger Institute as a model for sustainable and efficient data centre operations.

Sustainable Data Centres: A Lifeline for Scientific Research
Located within the prestigious Wellcome Genome Campus, in the heart of the UK’s life sciences hub known as the "Golden Triangle," the Wellcome Sanger Institute conducts pioneering research into human disease, genomic sequencing, and bioinformatics.
The vast amount of data generated by its genomic sequencers requires robust and energy-efficient data centre infrastructure to ensure swift processing and storage.
As part of the digital transformation project, the institute deployed Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure IT Advisor DCIM software, along with custom-designed APC PDUs, to enable comprehensive rack-level metering and monitoring.
“EfficiencyIT has been a strategic partner to the Sanger Institute’s data centre operations team for many years, and to see this project go full circle and deliver these outstanding energy savings is a testament to its vision for sustainable, cutting-edge science, powered by best-in-class technology,” Nick Ewing notes, Managing Director, EfficiencyIT.
Driving Life-Saving Research with Data Centre Innovation
Mark Yeeles , VP Secure Power Division, Schneider Electric UK&I, concludes, “Data centres, HPC, and AI have been integral to the life science sector for decades, and play a vital role in global lifesaving research, from cancer and dementia to infectious diseases.
We’re delighted to see the results of this data centre sustainability initiative, and to see the benefits our EcoStruxure platform has delivered to the Wellcome Sanger Institute, showcasing how critical national infrastructure can be efficient, resilient, and sustainable.”
This transformation showcases how modern technologies and strong partnerships can enable research institutions like the Wellcome Sanger Institute to push the boundaries of scientific discovery while maintaining a commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency.
The Wellcome Sanger Institute's strategic use of NVIDIA accelerated computing technologies further enhanced its energy savings, with the potential to save $1 million and 1,000 megawatt-hours annually.
