Efforts Towards Green Sustainability

Efforts Towards Green Sustainability

In an era defined by technology-driven growth industries, our relentless pursuit of progress has come at a significant environmental cost, impacting our planet in various ways. From the escalating energy demands of data centres to global warming, these consequences are both widespread and complex. The imminent threat of global temperatures rising by 1.5 degrees Celsius in the next two decades, as warned by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, has cast a shadow over our sustainability efforts.

Since 2021, Rakuten STAY has worked alongside Rakuten Energy, the electricity wholesale service of Rakuten, to transition their key accommodation facilities in Japan to operate entirely on renewable energy.

Rakuten's Sustainable Initiatives

In recent years, Rakuten has taken noteworthy strides towards environmental sustainability in Japan, actively contributing to the transition to renewable energy sources. Through service provided by Rakuten Energy, we have been at the forefront of promoting the adoption of renewable electricity.

Yatsugatake Grace Hotel, one of Rakuten’s business partners, is switching power to renewable energy sources powered by Rakuten Energy.

Additionally, we have participated in "Project R100", an initiative that brings together the world’s most influential businesses committed to 100% renewable power. We targeted to power Rakuten Ichiba merchants and Rakuten Travel hotels with 100% renewable energy, extending the benefits of clean power to business partners. We eventually successfully transitioned to 100% renewable electricity at offices, data centres and fulfilment centres in 2021, setting a significant precedent for sustainable business practices.

Sustainable Tech Repurpose Program

The Rakuten Asia Tech Repurpose Program simultaneously made access to tech easier while encouraging sustainability efforts.

Here at Rakuten Asia, we had recently unveiled an innovative initiative designed to empower its employees and contribute to the broader community. The Rakuten Asia Tech Repurpose Program is a unique endeavour offering employees the opportunity to acquire high-quality, refurbished IT equipment at a nominal fee. This initiative not only equips individuals for personal and professional endeavours but also champions environmental responsibility.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

In our office space, we have introduced dedicated recycling corners at the entrances of the office. These recycling corners offer employees and visitors a convenient and accessible avenue for the proper disposal of items made from various materials, including paper, plastic, batteries, and general waste. Rakuten Asia's dedication to sustainable practices within the workplace extends beyond its operational boundaries, setting an example for others to follow, and fostering a sense of collective responsibility for our planet's well-being.

Employee Engagement – Going Green

Rakuten Asia offers employees to contribute to sustainability in many different ways.

Only the Beginning

Our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility through proactive initiatives, such as the adoption of renewable energy, recycling corners at our offices, and empowering employees through the Rakuten Asia Tech Repurpose Program, exemplify our dedication to reducing our environmental impact. We extend our mission beyond our business operations, actively participating in CSR events like the SG Clean Initiative, where we collect litter and plant matter for recycling into valuable biomass for the Gardens by the Bay. These endeavours go beyond business objectives; they epitomise our corporate responsibility and our profound sense of duty to our planet. We invite others to join us in this collective journey towards a cleaner, greener, and more promising future because, in our modern age, sustainability is not just an option; it's an imperative for a better tomorrow.
