Ehd-e-Alast: The Covenant of Alast

In Islamic teachings, Ehd-e-Alast refers to a special moment when Allah (God) asked all human souls, even before they were born, a very important question. This question was: "Am I not your Lord?" The souls of all humans responded by saying: "Yes, You are!"

This event is mentioned in the Quran, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:172), and it symbolizes the agreement or covenant between humans and God. This covenant is a promise made by every soul that Allah is the Creator and the only one to be worshipped.

What Does It Mean?

  • Before We Were Born: The idea is that all souls existed in a different realm before coming to this world. During that time, Allah gathered all the souls and asked them if they recognized Him as their Lord. This moment is known as Ehd-e-Alast.
  • A Reminder of Faith: The purpose of this covenant is to remind humans that they have already agreed to believe in Allah. As we live in this world, we sometimes forget our purpose or get distracted by worldly things. Ehd-e-Alast serves as a reminder that deep down, every human being knows who their Creator is.

Why Is It Important?

Ehd-e-Alast is important because it lays the foundation of our belief in Tawheed (the oneness of God). It shows that belief in Allah is something natural for humans. This covenant is a reminder that:

  1. We Are Created for a Purpose: Our main purpose in life is to worship and obey Allah.
  2. Accountability: Since we all accepted Allah as our Lord, we are responsible for living our lives according to His guidance.

How Can We Live According to Ehd-e-Alast?

  • Worship and Obedience: Remembering Ehd-e-Alast means that we should strive to live according to the teachings of Islam, worship Allah sincerely, and follow the path of righteousness.
  • Seek Knowledge: Learning more about Islam and understanding the purpose of life helps us stay connected to the promise made during Ehd-e-Alast.
  • Gratitude: Be thankful for the blessings Allah has given us and show that gratitude through good deeds and kindness.

In simple words, Ehd-e-Alast is the moment when all human souls recognized Allah as their Lord before entering this world. It is a reminder that belief in Allah is part of our nature, and we are here to fulfill our promise by living a life of faith, gratitude, and righteousness.
