Electric Vehicle Charging Hubs racing ahead at SSE Energy Solutions
With Government ambitions for one-fifth of all car sales next year to be electric, our goal is to ensure drivers and fleets have access to the rapid charging hubs they need.
We have big plans to deliver 500 EV Charging Hubs with at least 5000 bays by 2030, and my role is to ensure that we install this rapid charging point infrastructure giving consumers the confidence to go electric.
Already we’ve delivered a rapid charging hub at Castlebank in Glasgow with six bays and three chargers powered by traceable, renewable energy.
Work is now underway to install ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging hubs with real estate giant M7 Real Estate Ltd, with up to 50 sites secured across England. Later this month, SSE will open the first of these sites at Gapton Hall in Great Yarmouth, delivering a 10-bay site with charging capabilities of up to 150 kilowatts enabling drivers to resume their journey within 20 to 40 minutes of plugging in. We have a further six in delivery right now and can’t wait to open them later this summer.
This type of portfolio is a great example of how we want to work with landlords and real estate businesses to deliver multiple sites at once throughout the UK and Ireland, and we are actively pursuing more of these types of projects with the possibility of 250 sites currently being discussed.

On top of that, we also have a further 28 sites secured and plan to have 50 sites open across the UK and Ireland this year, including the development of our ‘superhubs’. These superhubs will offer rapid charging on an even bigger scale, with more powerful chargers and new innovative solutions to battery storage with co-located assets. We’re looking to put these sites across the UK, including Manchester, Dundee and Teeside.
Over in Ireland, we plan to open 40 rapid-charging EV hubs within the next five years across both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Construction is getting underway at our first Irish project at Lough Sheever, Co. Westmeath, with the hope to launch this summer and the following site, at Blanchardstown, will be hot on the heels of this, looking to begin construction in September and a further three sites later this year.
Our Net Zero Acceleration programme SSE is making a £40bn investment in low carbon infrastructure by 2032. Our ambitions for EV form part of this programme, and I believe we have the determination and drive to ensure more drivers make cleaner and greener journeys.
Our hard working team is always available and on the search for land opportunities. So, if you are interested in transitioning to net zero and generating some additional income via our EV Charging Hubs, then please contact us today.

1yAmbitious and welcome ! Any idea how many of those hubs will be in Scotland? Kevin Welstead
We could really do with some of these projects closer to home, my team travel across the SSE hydro sites and find it very difficult to justify our EV cars, many a lost hour searching for a working charger!
