Elon Musk’s Twitter chaos, explained

To fully explain the story of Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover, we have to go back to April 2022. Charlie Warzel first responded to the news of Musk’s interest in acquiring Twitter with a wise mantra for these times: Do not bet against the dumbest possible outcome. Fast-forward to now: Musk has—finally—acquired the website, and there’s no shortage of dumb outcomes to keep track of. Most notably, the company experienced sweeping layoffs on Friday, halving the size of the workforce (and then reportedly asking some of them to come back).

That was just the first week. Here’s what Twitter’s future could look like:

Some users say they’re fleeing the platform for less chaotic alternatives, while others are standing their ground:

  • Why I Logged Off Twitter” by David Frum. Whatever Elon Musk does, users will be implicated in what happens to the site. That’s a responsibility we all have to take seriously.
  • I’m Staying on Twitter” by Tom Nichols. But it matters that Elon Musk now owns it.
  • Are the Libs Really Leaving?” by Kaitlyn Tiffany. Twitter would have to become functionally worse, and something else would have to be obviously better.

As we wait for the dust to settle, it’s worth remembering that many of the problems Twitter now faces aren’t necessarily new:

Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you next Monday!

“Oh god, I’ve just realised how desperately little I miss all the diet chat that goes on in offices!!!! It’s a madness, that so many people use weight loss goals to bond with their colleagues??” — Kate Leaver, responding on Twitter to Amanda Mull’s “The Tyranny of Workplace Food-Shamers.”

Elon is an unhinged, chaotic, hypocritical "leader" who needs a nap. The very b*lls to the wall attitude he preaches is what's ultimately taking him down. And sure, he can put in ungodly amounts of time and obsess over it, because he owns it and gets to live a very nice lifestyle from it (if he ever takes the time to--he seems to enjoy being a martyr). But he asks the same of people who are not receiving anywhere near the same compensation or have anywhere near the same upside that he does. And his ask is abusive in many cases. He's lost track of reality, and really should spend some time making Tesla actually profitable before he runs out of regulatory money and sees that ship sink, too. He's been out of his depth.
