Embrace the Journey: Life Lessons from a Hike

Embrace the Journey: Life Lessons from a Hike

Having returned from the hike of my life last June, I’ve now had some time for reflection.  In the vast expanse of life’s journey, we often find ourselves standing at the trailhead, facing a path shrouded in uncertainty.  I was certainly apprehensive, but also super excited to set foot across the Californian desert with all my belongings on my back. Life is akin to embarking on a hike, where the destination is unknown, and the terrain unpredictable. Yet, despite the apprehension that may loom like fog, there are invaluable lessons to be gleaned from the metaphorical hike of life.   Over time I will dissect the life-changing PCT hike, but for now, here are my initial thoughts.

  1. The View Changes Once You Start Walking: Just as the panorama shifts with each step taken on a hike, so too does our perspective on life evolve as we venture forward. We may begin with a clear vision of our goals and aspirations, only to find them morphing as we gain new insights and experiences along the way. It’s the act of moving forward, of taking that first step, that sets in motion the journey of self-discovery and growth.  I had watched so many YouTube videos of the PCT that I felt like I knew every single part of the first 100 miles or so by heart.  In my mind, I knew what to expect and I had a plan.  But a mix of people, terrain and unpredictable weather forced me to constantly change my plans, teaching me that in life, you need to be flexible, but ultimately, you need to do what is right for YOU, not anyone else.
  2. You Don’t Need All the Answers Right Now: How often do we stall at life’s crossroads, paralyzed by the fear of the unknown? Yet, just as a hiker doesn’t need to know every twist and turn of the trail before setting off, we don’t need to have all the answers before taking action. Life has a way of unfolding one step at a time, revealing its secrets and surprises gradually. Embrace the uncertainty, for it is often the catalyst for growth and transformation.
  3. New Paths Will Reveal Themselves: As we navigate our journey, we may encounter obstacles that block our path or forks in the road that leave us unsure of which way to turn. Yet, if we dare to keep moving forward, new paths will inevitably reveal themselves. It’s through exploration and experimentation that we uncover hidden opportunities and discover alternate routes to our destination.  I now look at my personal life and also my business life and realise that I may have taken the right fork when I perhaps should have taken the left.  On reflection, the chosen left route may have had some serious bumps and potholes along the way, but by moving forward a new path has revealed itself and opportunities have arisen in places where I least expected it.
  4. Courage to Get Started: Perhaps the most crucial lesson of all is the importance of summoning the courage to begin the journey. Just as a hiker must overcome inertia and take that first step onto the trail, so too must we overcome our fears and doubts and embark on the adventure of life. It’s in the act of stepping outside our comfort zones that we truly learn, grow, and discover our fullest potential.

Summary:

Life is indeed akin to a hike, full of twists and turns, ups and downs, and unexpected detours. Yet, it’s also a journey filled with breathtaking vistas, exhilarating moments, and the joy of discovery. So, lace up your boots, embrace the unknown, and embark on the adventure of a lifetime. The path may be uncertain, but with courage and perseverance, the destination will be more rewarding than you ever imagined.

Love this Julia - as you know, a trek in China taught me similar things - especially the aspect of reflection - which, as Ruth Forster has said, is spot on! A hike is always my go to in so many situations in both my personal and business life!

Love this post, spot on reflections I think the trick is to learn to enjoy the hike, and know when you are on the down wave the up wave will follow soon. Everything is temporary and we all have the power to learn and evolve, ride the waves, or climb the mountains.
