Embracing All Conditions: How to Thrive as a Business Owner, Rain or Shine🏌️♂️💼

Hello, Business Owners and fellow golf enthusiasts!

If you’re looking to scale your business, increase profitability, and reclaim more time for yourself, all while indulging your love of golf, then this LinkedIn newsletter, Teeing Up for Success, is for you.

How to avoid becoming a fair weather Business Owner

Running a business is a lot like golf—you’re constantly aiming for that perfect shot, even when the conditions (or the target!) seem impossible. Just look at Bryson DeChambeau, who’s been making headlines recently for his audacious attempts to hit a hole-in-one over his house. It’s bold, it’s creative, and it shows that greatness often lies in trying what others wouldn’t dare. But in business, we don’t always get to choose our playing field or weather conditions. As Arnold Palmer wisely said, "The road to success is always under construction," and those who embrace the tough rounds often come out stronger. In this newsletter, we’ll explore why facing challenges head-on—rain, wind, or uncertainty—is the key to building a business that thrives, no matter the conditions.

Let’s start with a confession: there’s nothing wrong with being a fair weather golfer. Who wouldn’t prefer a sunny day with a gentle breeze over battling rain, cold, and wind? If golf is your escape, it makes sense to pick and choose your conditions - if that's what you want to do.

But in business, we don’t have that luxury. As much as we’d all like to wait for perfect conditions—when the market is buoyant, clients are knocking at our door, and everything is rosy—that’s just not how it works. Business is more like golf on a dreary November day: muddy lies, biting winds, and greens that just don’t roll true.

The trick isn’t to avoid the bad weather—it’s to embrace it. Because the work you do now, while the conditions are tough, will set you up to shine when the skies clear and the market rebounds.

Golf and Business: A Tale of Two Approaches

A fair weather golfer makes a perfectly valid choice. They’ll play their best when conditions are just right, and there’s nothing wrong with enjoying the game that way. But they might not get the chance to experience the grit, growth, and satisfaction that come from battling through less-than-ideal conditions.

In business, we don’t get to pick the weather. We have to show up no matter what’s happening in the market. And here’s the silver lining: tough times teach us lessons and build resilience in ways that easy times never can.

Lessons From the Tough Rounds

Playing golf in the rain or wind forces you to adapt. You have to think differently, adjust your approach, and learn to work with the conditions rather than against them. The same applies to running your business in a challenging market.

Here’s what you gain by embracing the current "bad weather" in the economy:

1. A Sharper Focus on What Matters:When every shot (or every pound spent) counts, you’re forced to think strategically. This is backed by McKinsey’s 2010 study of companies during the 2008 financial crisis. They found that businesses focusing on efficiency and strategic investments during tough times outperformed their peers by 10% during the crisis and by over 30% in the recovery.

🏌️Action: Take a fresh look at your processes. Are they streamlined? Are you spending resources where they’ll have the most impact?

2. The Chance to Strengthen Relationships: A tough round of golf with friends often brings you closer together—after all, you’re united against the elements. In business, tough times give you the opportunity to deepen relationships with your best clients. Bain & Company found that increasing customer retention by just 5% can boost profits by up to 95%.

🏌️Action: Focus on nurturing your top clients. Show them you’re there for them, rain or shine.

3. Adaptability That Builds Confidence: Just as battling wind and rain makes you a more versatile golfer, tackling tough business conditions hones your ability to adapt and innovate. A Boston Consulting Group study of businesses during the 2008 crisis showed that those prioritising innovation during downturns saw annual returns increase by 17% in the recovery.

🏌️Action: Don’t let the current climate stop you from exploring new ideas. This could be the perfect time to innovate, adopt new technologies, or explore niche markets.

How to Play Your Best in the Current "Weather"

1. Invest in Your Team: Just like working on your short game, developing your team now will pay off when the pressure’s on. The Association for Talent Development found that companies investing in employee training see 218% higher income per employee and a 24% higher profit margin.

☔️ Action: Use this time to upskill your team and prepare them for when business picks up.

2. Embrace Technology: Rain or shine, technology can make your life easier. Deloitte’s 2023 report found that 60% of companies saw strong ROI from tech investments during downturns. Whether it’s AI-driven recruitment tools or streamlined CRMs, now is the time to modernise.

☔️ Action: Review your tech stack and identify tools that could make your processes faster and smarter.

3. Audit Your Client Base: Not every client is a hole-in-one. Look closely at who brings the most value to your business and focus your energy there.

☔️ Action: Segment your clients and create tailored strategies for retaining and growing those relationships.

When the Weather Improves, You’ll Be Ready

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to enjoy the game when the sun is shining and the conditions are perfect. But in business, we have to play through all seasons. The work you put in during tough times—refining your strategy, strengthening your team, and adapting to challenges—will make sure you’re in peak condition when fair weather returns.

So, whether you’re on the golf course or in the office, remember: embracing the elements might not be the easiest path, but it’s often the most rewarding. After all, isn’t there something satisfying about playing a great round, even when the weather’s against you?
