Embracing Change I: Menopause

My Journey and Insights from the Six Senses Menopause Retreat in Ibiza

Last September, I was privileged to be invited to guide a Transformational Breathwork journey at a Menopause Retreat alongside menopause expert Dr. Mindy Pelz among others, set against the enchanting backdrop of Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas in Ibiza. This experience was about supporting 24 incredible women successfully navigate the different stages of menopause, a profound life transition.

My own journey through menopause, like so many of yours, has been marked by a variety of unpleasant symptoms which have impacted me and those around me at many levels. Fortunately, I was armed with deep knowledge and understanding passed on from my mother Ann Voli . I was also equipped with practical tools that I was learning to teach, so I feel I have been able to step into this vibrant new chapter of my life with grace and understanding.

However, after this retreat in Ibiza, I couldn't help but notice the significant lack of accessible information on options available and open discussions about everything menopause, despite its impact, sooner or later, on more than half the world’s population.

This article is the first in a series dedicated to sharing insights, personal reflections and tools from my transition into post menopause.

The Silent Transition: Understanding Menopause

Unlike what many might still believe, menopause doesn’t happen overnight. It is preceded by perimenopause, a phase that begins in our early forties and can last between 7 and 14 years,  when our bodies start to produce less estrogen and progesterone. It's important to dispel the myth that menopause is an "old woman's problem." Many of us in our 40s and 50s are at the peak of our careers and personal lives and we are definitely NOT OLD!!. We need to be well-informed and equipped with the right tools to navigate this phase intelligently, as well as feel empowered to ask for support without feeling shame or guilt.


Breaking the Silence: Options and Awareness

The silence around perimenopause and menopause has made many women feel isolated and/or misunderstood. Thankfully, conversations are finally opening up, fostering a sense of understanding, empowerment, and community.

It was tragically common for women to be dismissed by a doctor with antidepressants or prescribed hormone replacement therapy (HRT) without discussion of other viable options. I don’t personally disagree with HRT, I just feel we deserve more information and options available so that we can make informed choices to have a voice on our health.

Although it is encouraging to see a burgeoning awareness and increased publications since 2020 about menopause in the leadership space, from reputable publishers such as HBR, and others about the impact of menopause on women’s mental and physical health, and the importance for companies to build in policies to support this transition for women, there is still much more that needs to happen.


Understanding the Emotional Rollercoaster

As an executive coach for high achieving women, I've observed firsthand how menopause can disrupt our emotional equilibrium and therefore our leadership impact. The decline in hormones such as estrogen and progesterone doesn't just affect our bodies—they are crucial in regulating mood and emotions. The reduction in estrogen, known for its mood-stabilizing effects, often leads to increased mood swings, irritability, and sadness for no apparent reasons, which can intensify feelings of frustration, fear and a loss of control.

The beauty of the tips I share below, is that there are not only useful for the menopausal journey, but will support us in the post-menopause years to emerge with a sense of peace, grace and wisdom. 


Four Tips for Managing the Emotional Rollercoaster

  1. Understanding: Knowing you are not alone and recognising the physiological nature of these changes can significantly smooth the emotional highs and lows.
  2. Daily Self-Compassion Practice: Cultivating kindness towards oneself through compassion practices and mindfulness can transform your relationship with your emotions.
  3. Wise Self-Care: in a world that glorifies busyness, this time is your opportunity to prioritise self-care and nurture social connections to boost your emotional wellbeing; not a nice to have, but essential for you to regain control of your emotional wellbeing and therefore your leadership impact.
  4. Surfing Your Emotions: Techniques like RAIN, by Tara Brach, provide a structured approach to Recognising, Allowing, Investigating, and Nurturing yourself during difficult emotional ups and downs, can be profoundly healing.
