Embracing Change and Reinventing Yourself: An Inspiring Interview with Colette Leeson

In a world where many believe that reinvention is only for the young, Colette Leeson FCIPD challenges that notion. At 55 years old, Colette made the bold decision to take a gap year and embark on a new chapter in her life. Leaving behind a well-paid and secure senior role in the public sector, Colette chose to follow her passion for helping others achieve their ambitions. In this interview, Colette shares her journey of self-discovery, the turning point that led her to reset and focus on her true calling, and her vision for the future. Get ready to be inspired by Colette's story of embracing change and finding true fulfillment.

Q: Colette, thank you for taking the time to share your journey with me. Can you share when you made the decision to take a gap year and explore new horizons?

Colette: It was in 2024 when I finally decided to take a leap of faith and embrace a gap year. After 38 years in the public sector, I felt the need for a change, to travel, learn, and continue building my careers coaching practice.

Q: Leaving a secure senior role after such a long tenure must have been a difficult decision. What ultimately led you to take the risk?

Colette: It was indeed a major step for me. The turning point came when my late mother was diagnosed with dementia. Caring for her made me realize the preciousness of life and the importance of pursuing my passion. I wanted to make a meaningful impact by helping others achieve their ambitions. Leaving my comfortable life behind was a risk, but I was excited and curious about what the future held.

Q: Can you share some of the diverse roles you had during your time in the public sector?

Colette: Certainly! Throughout my career, I had the privilege of working in various capacities. I served as a Careers Officer in West Belfast, a Quality Manager for Investors in People NI, and contributed to the Executive's anti-poverty strategy. I also led the equality impact assessment of the Review of Public Administration and played key roles in organizational change and digital transformation programs.

Q: It's evident that you had a successful career in the public sector. What made you realize that you were moving away from your true passion?

Colette: As I climbed the ladder of success, I found myself drifting further from my true passion. While I enjoyed the challenges and responsibilities of senior roles, I yearned for a deeper connection with my purpose. It was a gradual realization that led me to make the necessary changes in my life.

Q: Could you share the turning point that ignited your desire to reset and focus on helping others achieve their ambitions?

Colette: The turning point came when my late mother moved into a care home during her battle with dementia. It was there that I saw a care assistant place a simple A4 laminated card on her door. The card shared her name, her love for Spain, and her enjoyment of a "wee white wine." That simple act made me realize the importance of making one's life worth reading. After my mother's passing, I decided to reset and focus on my true passion, which is helping others achieve their ambitions.

Q: It's truly inspiring how you turned a personal experience into a catalyst for change. How did you proceed in pursuing your passion?

Colette: After my mother's death, I made a conscious effort to prioritize my passion. I quit smoking, drinking, and sought the guidance of a personal trainer. Additionally, I trained as a life coach and decided to focus on careers and interview coaching. I established my business, Colette Leeson | Confidence and emotional wellness coaching, initially as a part-time venture.

Q: What motivated you to take the next step and transition your part-time business into a full-time endeavor?

Colette: As someone who loves traveling, I realized that life can pass by on autopilot if we don't actively pursue our dreams. I didn't want to stay in the same place, circling the airport and missing out on new experiences. I knew it was time to fully commit and take the next step in my career journey.

Q: How has being more authentic and aligned with your passion affected your work with clients?

Colette: Being true to myself has had a profound impact on my work with clients. I've noticed improved results and have attracted more clients and opportunities that truly inspire me. By aligning my energy with my passion, I can better serve and empower others. There's nothing more fulfilling than witnessing my clients no longer needing my guidance and achieving their own growth.

Q: Your journey is a testament to the power of reinvention and embracing change. What is your vision for the future?

Colette: My vision is to become a digital nomad, helping professionals around the world land the job of their dreams.
