Embracing New Beginnings in Giessen: A Journey of Cultural and Academic Immersion
Moving to Giessen, Germany, as a student at Justus Liebig University (JLU) has been an exciting chapter filled with opportunities for learning and growth. My time here has been defined by academic exploration, cultural engagement, and an ever-deepening connection with the local community. Let me take you through some key highlights from my journey so far.
Engaging with the Community:
Volunteering has been an essential part of integrating into my new environment. I came across an initiative encouraging people to become a Kulturbegleiter (Cultural Companion). This role is designed to accompany individuals to cultural events, making it easier for them to participate and connect with the local culture. Whether it’s a concert, theater, or art exhibition, this is a great way for me to contribute while experiencing the vibrant cultural life of Giessen. You can reach out to the Freiwilligenzentrum (Volunteer Center) to get involved. It's a wonderful way to build relationships and give back to the local community while enriching my own understanding of German culture.
The Beauty of Autumn in Giessen:
As the seasons change, so does the landscape of the city. The beautiful golden leaves in the parks and around the university create a stunning atmosphere for reflection and relaxation. My walks across campus are filled with the vibrant hues of autumn, reminding me of the importance of maintaining balance between academic pressure and self-care.
There’s a calming sense of nature surrounding JLU, which makes even simple outdoor activities like reading or studying at the park benches an enjoyable break from the rigor of lectures.
Campus Life Beyond Lectures:
While JLU is known for its academic excellence, there’s also a fun, social side to student life. One of my favorite discoveries on campus was a foosball table outside, emblazoned with the Justus Liebig University logo. A symbol of how we, as students, engage in informal, playful activities to unwind. Whether after a lecture or between classes, gathering around this table for a quick match is a great way to connect with fellow students and share some lighthearted moments. It’s the small things, like this foosball table, that add to the sense of community here.
Navigating Giessen and Beyond:
One of the most practical aspects of student life in Giessen is the ease of travel, thanks to the Semester Ticket. The map of Hessen outlines the extensive network of railways and bus routes available to students, allowing us to explore cities such as Frankfurt, Marburg, and Kassel. The Semester Ticket (now called Deutschland Ticket) provides a gateway to exploring the rich cultural and historical landscape of Hessen. Whether for academic trips or weekend excursions, the ability to travel freely across the region broadens the scope of what we can experience as students.
Staying Informed:
JLU places great emphasis on staying informed, both locally and globally. I’ve come across various reading stands filled with local newspapers like the Gießener Anzeiger and magazines like Das Parlament. This provides a steady stream of information on politics, research, and current events. I particularly enjoy flipping through the pages during my breaks, as it offers insights into local and national issues. It’s a small but important part of feeling connected to the community and staying engaged with the broader social and political landscape.

Exploring Sustainability and Future Challenges:
Sustainability is a central theme at JLU, and this is evident in the materials available on campus. A publication titled Verkehrs Wende (Transport Transition) caught my attention, as it addresses the urgent need for sustainable urban mobility solutions. Reading such material alongside attending lectures or seminars on climate change and urban development highlights how the university fosters a critical understanding of contemporary challenges. The content reflects the need for innovative strategies in achieving a sustainable future, something I’m passionate about as I work on my own research here at JLU.
Building Connections at Social Events:
The student life at JLU is as vibrant as it is diverse. The calendar is packed with events—from the Welcome Reception for International Students to salsa parties, karaoke nights, and even a Halloween-themed evening with pumpkins, werewolves, and bats. Social activities like the Kickerturnier (foosball tournament) or poker night provide great opportunities to meet fellow students, make new friends, and unwind after a week of classes. The events held at Lokal International are especially engaging, offering a platform for cultural exchange and social interaction. These gatherings enhance my university experience but also allow me to create lasting memories with peers from around the world.
