National Grid HVO trial cuts fleet emissions nearly 90 per cent
Fleet vehicles from National Grid’s Boston depot have cut emissions by 89 per cent by swapping diesel for hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).
A recent trial has seen more than 100 National Grid vehicles adopting the fuel, which is derived from used cooking oils, tallows and other recyclable waste. The Boston fleet enables linespersons, engineers and technicians to fix faults, restore power, and undertake maintenance across Lincolnshire.
According to National Grid, the average monthly mileage covered by the vehicles using HVO is 1,100 miles, with the biofuel used as a drop-in replacement for diesel. It’s claimed HVO could be a vital tool in decarbonising National Grid’s operations, particularly for off-road HGVs like the Mercedes Unimogs in National Grid’s fleet, where electrification is not yet an option.
Multi-Million-Pound investment to create jobs in Sheffield
BAE Systems is establishing a new artillery development and production facility in Sheffield that will create 50 high-skilled jobs. This facility is being funded with investments of more than £25 million.
The new 94,000 sq ft facility will house a state-of-the-art factory specialising in artillery expertise that will deliver the Company’s M777 lightweight towed howitzer manufacturing capability and support the UK government’s ambitions to sustain and revitalise vital UK artillery capabilities.
“Our aim is to deliver long-term artillery capabilities for the UK, which will safeguard, sustain and grow a critical, specialised British industrial capability as well as provide important opportunities for exports,” John Borton, managing director of BAE Systems’ Weapons Systems UK business.
British Steel opens £10m stocking facility for 'railways of the future'
British Steel has opened a £10m stocking facility with capacity to hold 25,000 tonnes of finished rail. The new rail hub is based at British Steel’s headquarters in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, where the vast majority of rail laid in the UK is made.

The investment forms part of British Steel’s strategy to support Network Rail in its delivery of track maintenance, renewal and enhancement activities. This dedicated storage facility will ensure that there is enough rail stock as and when Network Rail requires it. From this location, rails can be safely handled, stored and available for loading.
Craig Harvey, British Steel’s commercial director, rail, said: “We are committed to building the railways of the future, and this investment supports the government’s ambition to improve rail travel and connectivity throughout the UK.”
When fully stocked, the storage facility will hold around 25,000 tonnes of 108m finished rail – largely 56E1 and 60E2 section rails.
Gazelle Wind Power secures €11.4m in funding round
Gazelle Wind Power, a developer of a next-generation floating offshore wind platform technology, has secured an €11.4m funding round. The funding will further accelerate the development of Nau Azul, Gazelle's 2MW grid-connected demonstrator in Aguçadoura, Portugal.
Led by Indico Capital Partners, other investors included DST Group, August One, Wah Kwong, and E2IN2, among others. Gazelle’s next generation floating offshore wind platform is claimed to address industry challenges including high mass production and installation costs, complex supply chain logistics, limited suitable installation sites, reducing the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) whilst mitigating the environmental impact of traditional platforms on marine ecosystems.
