Emotional Intelligence in the Beginning and at the End
I had the opportunity to give a virtual presentation each of the last two days. They were very different, but the topic of emotional intelligence ran through them both. Yesterday my dad's last workplace had a zoom celebration of life for him. As the professional speaker in the family, I was chosen to speak. Four generations including about 20 relatives were there virtually. The hospital where my dad worked added another 50 participants. A number of my dad's coworkers also spoke. I was proud to hear of the impact and influence my dad had at work. He was present wherever he was. Whether he was in the operating room or the back yard. Work life balance is challenging for many of us. My Dad's focus on who was in the room made it seem easy for him. His empathy and inclusion were brought up repeatedly at his memorial. He left a remarkable legacy and had a life well lived.
Today I gave a virtual talk for the YESS Institute's Road to Success Scholarship Celebration. YESS works with, and mentors low income high schoolers, teaching them emotional intelligence. They were giving out 9 college scholarships to seniors graduating from their program. Each of them had stories of emotional and scholastic growth through their high school careers. Each of them was well spoken and a leader in their high school. There's great promise for the future of these young scholars. They're just starting their roads to success. Thanks to the staff at YESS for their commitment to the kids in their program, and thanks to my dad's coworkers for honoring him the way they did. This was a contrast of potential and fullfilled potential for me. It's also an example of how the lifelong practice of emotional intelligence impacts everyone around you, and how emotional intelligence can give people just starting out a chance to succeed. #success #EI #keynotespeaker
