Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace: Effective Leadership during the Pandemic

Emotional Intelligence or Emotional Quotient (EQ) is an individual’s ability to understand and manage their own feelings and those of others and use this information to conduct their behavior. The global coronavirus outbreak and its resulting effect on workplace culture have shifted the spotlight on the significance of emotional intelligence in business leaders. Leaders are expected to communicate effectively with their employees and empathize with them, all of which come naturally to emotionally intelligent individuals.

What are employees looking for?

During these uncertain times, people are looking for leaders that can inspire them, as they face unprecedented pressure in their personal and professional life. Employees will feel comfortable if the leaders in their workplace display the following attributes:

·     People want to be able to have confidence in their leaders and share their problems with them for resolution.

·     Leaders should be good listeners and show sympathy towards their employees’ struggles, even if they are unable to solve their issues immediately.

·     Employees find comfort and stability mindset in presence of empathetic leaders who can demonstrate strength and firmness in these trying times.

·     Above all, people want to follow leaders that exude optimism regarding the outlook of the organization.

What are the qualities of a leader with high EQ that can keep employees happy?

Leaders with high EQ keep their employees motivated by demonstrating the following qualities:

·     They build good interpersonal relationships with employees that are based on mutual trust and respect. They invest time in knowing their employees, their problems, and put sincere efforts towards resolving those issues.

·     They display an understanding of the employees’ needs and respond to their feelings with kindness and compassion. They are optimistic in their attitude and try to provide hope to the employees as well.

·     They are accommodating towards others’ requirements, creating a flexible work environment for employees to succeed.

·     They communicate well with the employees, listening to their problems intently and responding assertively. They keep an open channel for emotional expression and connection with their employees.

·     Ultimately, they act as an asset for their employees by following through on their promises.

In these volatile and uncertain times, with an ongoing global pandemic and a looming economic crisis, leaders with a high emotional quotient will play an indispensable role in the success of organizations and the well-being of their employees.
