Empathy First, Judgment Last.
I’ve been thinking a lot about the power of empathy lately and how it’s often the missing ingredient in so many conversations, both personal and professional. It’s so easy, too easy to jump to conclusions, to critique without context, and to offer solutions without understanding the problem. But here’s the truth; we must all try to empathize before we criticize.
Imagine this - You’re in a meeting, and someone’s idea doesn’t align with your vision. What’s your first instinct? Is it to point out the flaws, or is it to pause and ask, “What led you to this approach?” That pause can be transformative. It’s the bridge between misunderstanding and mutual respect.
“Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” — Stephen R. Covey
This quote resonates deeply with me. Too often, we approach situations with our answers already formed, ready to prove someone wrong rather than seeking to understand their perspective. But what if, instead, we asked questions? What if we took the time to listen with the intention of truly hearing, rather than formulating our disproof?
The Power of Asking “What’s Wrong?”
When we criticize without understanding, we risk breaking down relationships, down playing creativity, and, most importantly, hurting people. But when we ask, “What’s wrong?” before saying, “You’re wrong,” we show that we value the person behind the idea.
This approach isn’t just for work; it’s for life. Whether it’s a colleague missing deadlines, a friend acting distant, or a family member snapping at you unexpectedly, taking a moment to ask, “What’s going on?” can uncover layers you might never have considered.
Empathy in Action
I’ve seen this principle play out in my own experiences. There was a time when I was quick to critique a project, only to discover later that the team was struggling with limited resources and personal challenges. My critique, while valid in some ways, missed the bigger picture. When I took the time to understand their struggles, the dynamic shifted. We moved from conflict to collaboration, from frustration to shared solutions.
Empathy isn’t just about kindness; it’s about effectiveness. It builds trust, promoting open communication, and creates an environment where people feel safe to share their ideas; even the imperfect ones.

Why Empathy Matters Now More Than Ever
Empathy is our superpower. It’s the tool that helps us connect, even when we disagree. It reminds us that we’re all human, navigating our own unique challenges.
So today, I challenge all of us
Before you criticize, pause.
Before you judge, listen.
And before you decide someone is wrong, take a moment to ask, “What’s wrong?”
Because at the end of the day, it’s not about being right; it’s about being understanding. And that, I believe, is how we make the world and our workplaces a little better every day.
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view.” — Harper Lee
Let’s commit to leading with empathy and making space for understanding before judgment.
