Employee benefits from volunteering day
All our employees are able to undertake two volunteering days per year, we believe that this is rewarding for the employee and organisation. Recently Dan Walker one of our Community Engagement Officers volunteered at Watford Workshop - a local charity- below in his own words is a feedback on his day.
Volunteering days are one of our employee benefits
I used one of my volunteering days to go and help out at Watford Workshop, an amazing local charity.
Watford Workshop is a brilliant local charity providing work experience and skills training for disadvantaged people. They support people with a range of disabilities to improve their confidence and employability, and have done some great work, with 5 people in the last two years transitioning into full time unsupported employment!
I have worked closely with Linda and the team to explore ways we could support Watford Workshop. We have recently awarded them funding towards the project, and I was very keen to visit them and see what they get up to on a daily basis. Using a volunteering day I was able to spend yesterday volunteering in the workshop, helping the team out.
My morning started with a brief induction and tour of the building, carried out by supervisor Michael. Michael mentioned that the entire team are always very excited to see a new face and meet volunteers, and stressed the importance of volunteering generally being important to small organisations such as Watford Workshop.
Following a whistle-stop tour of the workshop and a quick cuppa, it was time to get to work! I was introduced to my Team Leader for the day, Parveen, and Daniel who I was going to be working with. My first task of the day was to open a pallet of boxes containing mouthwash so that Daniel could check for leaks and damage. While this might sound pretty mundane, it was certainly a physical task and required a lot of lifting! Two and a half pallets later, it was time to swap positions so I went over to quality control. In what seemed like a blink of eye, it was soon lunchtime and having worked up an appetite I was looking forward to a break and something to eat. Lunch was served by another Daniel, who is being supported by the Workshop. He has been working on his cookery skills and served up a delicious all-day breakfast for us all. It was really tasty and very much welcomed following a strenuous morning!
In the afternoon, I was moved to another station; this time I was building boxes to store insoles for distribution by Tesco. I was thankful that wasn’t a great amount of heavy lifting involved as the morning had begun to take its toll! I worked with Mohammed and another volunteer called Nasir and made very good progress, filling a pallet full of boxes ready to be transported to Tesco. It was really good to get to know Mohammed and Nasir, as we had to gel very quickly and establish a rapport so we were able to work together to get the job done. The day drew to a close with us having completed the job at hand and the Workshop team preparing for their fundraising quiz last night at the Tudor Arms in North Watford.
Unfortunately, due to prior commitments I was unable to attend, but I get the feeling that Linda is particularly was taking it very seriously and had her eyes on winning the quiz!
Overall, it was an extremely enjoyable and rewarding day. To work closely with the Watford Workshop really shone a light on how much work they do, and the quality of output as well. It was an extremely positive experience and it was great to get to know some of the team, even if there were more than a couple of us named Daniel! I was really pleased to see how supported everyone there is and am really happy that we have been able to award funding to such an important and worthy local cause. I would invite anyone else within the organisation to spend time with the Watford Workshop team learning more about the services they provide and the work experience/skills training they give to their clients – they have said they are more than happy for anyone from the organisation to spend time volunteering with them.
If you would like to take advantage of a volunteering day either at Watford Workshop or elsewhere, please remember that you have two volunteering days a year that can be used along with your standard annual leave balance. As long as you receive approval from your line manager you are able to book these in to spend time making a difference with whichever causes are close to your heart!
