#EmpoweredEmployment - Unlocking the workplace for Muslim Women

It was a pleasure to speak at the launch of #EmpoweredEmployment - Unlocking the Workplace for Muslim Women this evening at UK Parliament. This is the largest, most comprehensive study on Muslim women's' experiences in the workplace by Dr Suriyah Bi and supported by Muslim Women Connect.  Download a copy of the report here: https://www.academia.edu/42079617/Empowered_Employment_Unlocking_the_Workplace_for_Muslim_Women

The research has bought to light data which we could predict but now have tangible evidence to support action. Action from government re policy is welcomed, as well as action from HE institutions and UK organisations. Based on the recommendations my starter steps for organisations to support access to professions and foster a culture where all can thrive are as follows:

1: Create a culture of #belonging for all - if all individuals feel a sense of belonging they are more likely to be engaged, excel, be productive, creative and innovate in role creating long term value for the organisation.

2: Get the basics right: Do you have a D&I strategy and dignity at work policy in place? Is there a clear link between your organisational values, D&I and lived behaviours? Have you analysed all aspects of systemic processes to de-bias? Is your recruitment process inclusive? Is the environment i.e. workspaces, multifaith areas, awareness raising in place and ERG's to create a space for affinity and networking.

2: Adopt an intersectional approach to your gender agenda: Is your gender agenda benefiting all women at the organisation or a subset? Analyse your data with an intersectional lens to move away from a binary gender lens. In addition are you fostering a culture of being human and having individual conversations re needs and requirements for success?

3: Adopt a curious mindset in your leaders and wider population - encourage conversation to build understanding of individual values and drivers. Through sharing stories, experiences and motivators you will foster and encourage long term behaviour change.

If you would like to know more about fostering an inclusive culture or adopting a faith lens to your D&I strategy please get in touch.
