🌟 Empowering ESL Learning with English Immersion! 🌟

🌟 Empowering ESL Learning with English Immersion! 🌟

I’m writing this for all the ESL teachers who think they need to speak in their students’ native language when teaching English.

Well, have you ever wondered how students can understand the lessons if the teacher can’t speak the students’ native language?

I wondered that too and then I thought about myself and my own teaching way back when!

For 20 years I was a teaching English to non-native speakers.

I could only speak English because I could not speak their languages and my students learned to speak every day in their classes with me.

Same goes for all the millions of other native English teachers teaching ESL students.

Students learn to speak English without translations in their native language when they are immersed in the English.

Actually in my group class with non-native ESL teachers, they were all feeling so bad because their students couldn’t speak English even though the students had learned all the grammar they needed.

They were shaking their heads because they were concerned that students did not speak English, even though they may have had years of English classes.

I was sharing some insights about education with Ministers of Education in a non-English speaking country recently.

One high level official in the ESL department was moaning that their non-native English teachers were only speaking English in their classes for about 10% of the time.

They wondered how the students would ever learn to speak English.

I voiced my opinion that ESL teachers in these situations wrongly believe that that students won’t understand the lesson and I explained the thoughts above.

But let's face the situation. Here are some reasons why this might happen and the potential consequences, along with suggestions for improvement:

Reasons for ESL Teachers Not Speaking English:

1️⃣ Lack of Proficiency

Some ESL teachers might not be sufficiently proficient in spoken English themselves.

This can lead to a lack of confidence in using English as the primary language of instruction.

2️⃣ Comfort Zone

Teachers, especially if they have been teaching for a long time, might be more comfortable using their native language or a language commonly understood by students.

This can create a comfort zone that is hard to break out of.

3️⃣ Effective Explanation

In certain situations, using the students' native language can help the teachers to explain complex concepts more clearly.

Teachers are conscientious and might resort to this approach much too often to ensure that students understand the material.

4️⃣ Cultural Sensitivity

Teachers might use the students' native language to establish a more personal and relatable connection with them.

They may also want to show respect for their culture and background.

But There Are Consequences of Not Speaking English in ESL Classes:

1️⃣ Limited Exposure:

Students need consistent exposure to the target language (English) to develop their listening and speaking skills.

If the teacher doesn't speak English regularly, students might not have enough opportunities to practice and improve.

2️⃣ Language Dependency:

Students can become overly reliant on their native language, weakening their ability to think and communicate directly in English.

3️⃣ Reduced Confidence:

A lack of exposure to spoken English can lead to a lack of confidence among students when communicating in real-life situations.

4️⃣ Limited Vocabulary and Fluency:

Without consistent exposure to English, students' vocabulary and fluency may not develop as effectively as they would with immersive instruction.

5️⃣ Learners Require a Role Model to Learn a Language:

If a good role model is provided in English, it is one of the surest ways that learners will not reach success in English acquisition.

What ESL Teachers Can Do:

✳️ Professional Development:

Leaders need to provide and offer opportunities for teachers to continually and constantly engage in professional development activities to improve their own English proficiency and teaching techniques.

Attending online or in person courses with native English coaches can help in three ways.

1️⃣ Firstly, they can receive many worthwhile ideas and suggestions for things to do in their classes.

2️⃣ Secondly, they will be boosting their own English-speaking skills.

3️⃣ And lastly teachers will gain self-confidence to use new methods and speak fluently.

With confidence to speak, ESL teachers will use increasingly more English in their  classes and benefit their students.

✳️ Immerse Students:

Create an immersive classroom environment where English is the primary language of instruction and communication.

This helps students become more comfortable with using English in various contexts and with limited translation necessary.

✳️ Use Visuals and Context:

Incorporate and teach with visuals, gestures and body language, and real-life contexts to aid understanding without resorting to the native language.

✳️ Simplify Language:

Use simpler, easy to understand vocabulary, speak slowly, and provide clear explanations to make the content more accessible to students. Practice giving explanations of difficult vocabulary before the lessons.

✳️ Gradual Transition:

If students have a low level of English proficiency, teachers can gradually reduce the use of the native language as students while still maintaining a high level of English to become more comfortable with English.

✳️ Encourage Peer Interaction:

Promote group peer activities such a role plays or discussions in English.

This allows students to practice speaking and listening skills with their peers, creating a supportive learning environment.

✳️ Provide Additional Support:

Offer extra help outside of class for students who may struggle with understanding English-only instruction.
