Empowering Europe and Connecting Humans: A Roadmap for Digital Transformation

On January 18th, despite the heavy snowfall in Brussels, a successful matchmaking event for Human-Centric AI took place, aiming to accelerate digital transformation across Europe. The event witnessed active participation from representatives of SMEs, academia, R&D institutions, and digital innovation hubs. The discussions and one-to-one meetings that unfolded during the event fostered insightful conversations and laid the groundwork for potential collaborations.
The event kicked off with a keynote address by Emanuela Girardi, from CLAIRE | Rome and a significant spokesperson for the EU Commission on the AI Innovation Network, and Hans De Canck, Head of CLAIRE | Brussels and Director of FARI - AI for the Common Good Institute . The speakers emphasised the importance of understanding and leveraging the AI competencies network in Europe. They highlighted the need for Adra - AI-Data-Robotics-Association to bring technology into society, addressing the lag in Europe's AI development and the urgency to regain a leadership position.
Further, Reinout Van Hullebus from hub.brussels shared insights into EU procurement, focusing on digital opportunities. He emphasised the need for transparent rules and processes in public procurement, ensuring equal treatment of participants. The session explored various procedures, from announcement to payment, shedding light on fundamental principles that guide the evaluation and awarding of tenders.

Frédéric Suche, National Contact Point for the European Innovation Council presented funding opportunities under Horizon Europe, with a particular focus on AI. Participants were encouraged to explore AI-centric developments and make informed decisions about their positioning in the competitive landscape. The session highlighted info days organised by the Commission to showcase how AI can be integrated into developing technologies.
Testimonies from industry players like Upcominds and Stratejai provided valuable insights. SMEs were advised to start small, seek partnerships, and maintain competitiveness. Stratejai's Stefano Sedola stressed the importance of human-centric AI, particularly in making life easier for the elderly and assisting doctors in decision-making.
The event explored the role of EDIH SustAIn.brussels in fostering digital and sustainable ambitions. Arjen Van de Walle, Sustainable digitalisation advisor at SustAin highlighted the industry's transition to Industry 4.0, emphasising the potential for innovation through simulation tools and industrial twins. The session touched upon the significance of addressing sustainability from economic, societal, and ecological perspectives.
Despite challenging weather conditions, the Human-Centric AI matchmaking event in Brussels was a resounding success. The event facilitated meaningful discussions, fostered collaboration, and provided valuable insights into the future of AI in Europe. As the continent strives to lead in AI innovation, the importance of collaboration, education, and sustainable practices emerged as key takeaways.
