OCPP achieves CENELEC standardization

The Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP by Open Charge Alliance ) has been officially recognized as a standard by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC). This approval follows its earlier acceptance as an International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard, further solidifying OCPP's role in promoting open standards within the electric vehicle charging industry. The CENELEC vote concluded with 19 in favor and only 1 against, reflecting strong support for OCPP's integration into European standards. This milestone underscores the collaborative efforts of the OCPP community in advancing a smarter and more sustainable charging infrastructure. Learn more about this milestone here.

Cambridge signs 50 MW Virtual PPA with MN8 Energy

The city of Cambridge, Massachusetts, has entered into a 50 MW virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with MN8 Energy , sourcing power from the 135 MW Prairie Solar project in Illinois. This marks the largest VPPA signed by a U.S. city and the first used to offset residential carbon emissions. The agreement will deliver 113,000 MWh of renewable energy annually, enough to power over 25,000 homes and cover nearly half of Cambridge's households. Renewable energy certificates from the project will support Cambridge's carbon reduction goals, while the solar facility will benefit residents in Champaign County, Illinois. California to require EV charging in all new residential units by 2026

Starting in 2026, California will require all new residential units to include electric vehicle (EV) charging capabilities. The updated building codes mandate that new multi-family dwellings with assigned parking must have at least one "EV Ready" space, equipped with a 240V outlet or charger. Hotels and motels will need 65% of parking spaces to be EV-ready, while 20% of spaces in new commercial, office, or retail lots must also be prepared for EV charging. Learn more about this new regulation here.

Mercedes-Benz presents CLA EV with 466-mile range and rapid charging

Mercedes-Benz AG is set to launch the 2026 CLA EV, an entry-level electric vehicle designed to set new standards in range, efficiency, and charging speed. The CLA EV is expected to achieve up to 466 miles (750 km) on a full charge, with its 800V high-voltage system enabling rapid charging—adding approximately 248 miles (400 km) in just 15 minutes. During testing, the vehicle traveled 2,309 miles (3,717 km) in 24 hours, utilizing 40 ten-minute charging sessions. The CLA EV will also feature Mercedes' latest software and connectivity technology, including the new MB.OS operating system. Official unveiling is scheduled for early 2025, with deliveries anticipated later that year.

Number of the Week: 24.5%

In 2023, renewable energy accounted for 24.5% of the European Union's gross final energy consumption, a 1.4 percentage point increase from 2022. Sweden led the EU with 66.4%, followed by Finland at 50.8% and Denmark at 44.9%. At the other end of the spectrum, Luxembourg (11.6%), Belgium (14.7%), and Malta (15.1%) reported the lowest shares of renewables. The EU still needs an average annual increase of 2.6 percentage points to meet its 2030 target of 42.5%. Learn more about this milestone here.
