Empowering Women: Transforming Lives through Community Bathrooms

Empowering Women: Transforming Lives through Community Bathrooms

In Uttar Pradesh, Newada block of Kaushambi district has faced significant challenges with access to basic sanitation and hygiene facilities, especially for women and girls. However, thanks to a groundbreaking project by HDFC as part of their CSR initiative, in partnership with BISLD Uttar Pradesh, this situation is changing.

Initiative

Over the course of the project, 105 community bathrooms are being constructed across 15 villages: 30 in 2022-23, 60 in 2023-24, and 15 in 2024-25. These bathrooms are designed specifically to meet the needs of women and girls, providing a safe and private space for personal hygiene.

Design and Functionality

Each community bathroom measures 10 feet by 5 feet and is divided into two sections: one for bathing and one for washing clothes. This thoughtful design ensures that women and girls have a secure place for personal hygiene while also supporting their daily chores.

Community Engagement

Before construction began, the BISLD team held village meetings to discuss the project with local residents. The villagers welcomed the initiative, recognizing the urgent need for better hygiene facilities. Earlier, women and girls had to rely on inadequate and unsafe facilities or even open spaces for bathing and washing clothes, thereby compromising on their privacy and security.

Impact

The construction of these community bathrooms has transformed the lives of women and girls in Newada block. They now have access to safe and private spaces which has greatly enhanced their sense of dignity and well-being. The bathrooms have also contributed to a healthier and more equitable community.

Role of BISLD Uttar Pradesh

The role of BISLD Uttar Pradesh, the implementation partner, has been crucial in the success of this project. They not only oversaw the construction but also worked closely with the villagers to ensure that the facilities are well maintained and sustainably managed. Regular training sessions and awareness programmes on the importance of hygiene have been conducted for the benefit of the community.

Conclusion

The community bathrooms in Newada block have not only improved hygiene standards but have also empowered local women and girls, nurturing a healthier and more equitable community.

It's a great initiative with respect to health and hygiene. But, I am unable to understand what ways it empowered the women.

BAIF, team has been doing great work. My best wishes always. Sustainability of the project is also important. The SHGs should further take up this responsibility.
