The end of Google Analytics Universal Tracking code and what action you need to take
This newsletter looks at important changes to Google Analytics Universal Tracking code and what you need to do next. We are encouraging our clients to take action sooner rather than later.
What’s been announced by Google?
As all of our clients will know, we are big fans of Google Analytics and we have encouraged all of our clients to ensure they have Google Analytics on their websites to track important website data. We are also fans of the Universal Tracking Code (Google Analytics 3) which we have happily used for many years. Along with many other marketeers, we have not been so keen to use the later G4 code as we prefer the reporting in the traditional Universal Tracking. However, Google have announced that the Universal Tracking code will soon be a thing of the past. “All standard Universal Analytics properties will stop processing new hits on July 1, 2023.” Furthermore the tracking data from the Universal Tracking Code won’t migrate over to G4.
What does this mean for your website reporting?
This means from July next year you will no longer be able to track traffic to your website if you only use the Universal Tracking code. Furthermore, Google have announced the following:

What action do you need to take?
We are encouraging our clients to ensure they add G4 tracking code to their websites NOW! Why? Because it is important to be able to compare and contrast data and if you start tracking now you will have over one year’s worth of data to look back on when these changes take effect in July 2023.
You can carry on using your Universal Tracking code until July next year. However, once this stops tracking you can move to the G4 reporting and still have over a year’s worth of data to compare website statistics. This is particularly important if your business is seasonal. At some point the Universal Tracking data will be completely gone, so if you act now you will have at least one year of data.
For now, we recommend adding a Google Analytics 4 property alongside your existing Universal Tracking code. Google’s guidelines state that “There are no changes to your Universal Analytics property and it continues to collect data as always. You can always access both properties via the property selector or Admin screen.” Here’s how to set up a Google Analytics 4 property alongside your existing Universal Tracking code:
