Energizing and exhilarating: a transformative quarter at Delterra | Q3 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

I am delighted to bring you the latest updates from a quarter filled with exciting milestones and profound discussions that underscore Delterra's accelerating impact and unwavering commitment to transforming waste management and material circularity.

One memorable event from this quarter was our participation in NYC Climate Week, marked by engaging discussions throughout that highlight the growing emphasis on waste management at global forums and reaffirms the significance of the work we do in addressing one of the world's most pressing environmental challenges. This was illustrated by the discussion during our co-hosted event with Mars and WWF, where we discussed bridging the financing gaps across the waste hierarchy. This discussion really brought home the need to develop innovative and flexible financial solutions for Global South countries to implement circular systems for plastics and other waste. It is becoming increasingly clear that there is a major gap in capability building, OpEx and fit-for-purpose CapEx for countries that are motivated to tackle waste but are under-resourced to do so. This is something we see again and again in the countries where we work, and it is a message Delterra hopes to bring to the discussions on the upcoming Global Plastics Treaty INC-3 session in Kenya next month.

Program Updates: Driving Sustainable Change

  • In our upstream work, we are delighted to see continued adoption of the Plastic IQ tools across Indonesia and Brazil. Our team is currently supporting over 100 users of the Pro and Lite tools as they help companies design strategies that improve their portfolio’s environmental impact.
  • Downstream, our Rethinking Recycling program is speeding ahead in Argentina, with our first full city roll-out now covering 70% of the population with waste and recycling services, putting Olavarrìa on track to become the most circular city in Argentina. Meanwhile our innovative low value plastics project in Buenos Aires continues to grow, with 400+ tons of flexible plastics recycled.
  • In Brazil, we have now kicked off our first project in the city of Guaxupé, in which we will partner with established local organizations to deliver our behavior change model for separating waste, organics and recyclables.
  • In Indonesia, our proof-of-concept villages in Denpasar have successfully reached the handover phase and will run the program independently going forward. I was delighted to participate in the handover of our very first community, Sanur Kauh, where they were patient enough to let me try a short message in Bahasa.

As we conclude this transformative quarter, I want to extend my gratitude to each member of the Delterra family, including our partners and stakeholders, for your unwavering dedication to our mission. The mounting energy and progress we've witnessed is a testament to our collective strength and vision.

Coming up, we look forward to participating in INC-3 and COP28 and I invite you to connect with us if you or your colleagues plan to attend. I’ll also be speaking at the MIT event Innovation in Motion. Until then, I encourage you to get inspired and stay updated on Delterra’s real world insights and practical actions for a circular economy.

Warm regards,

Dr. Shannon Bouton

President and CEO of Delterra
