Energy Reset: Navigating a Hyperconnected World with The Reset Mindset

Energy Reset: Navigating a Hyperconnected World with The Reset Mindset

After launching my new book, The Reset Mindset, I quickly found myself overwhelmed—juggling social media, email campaigns, podcasts, webinars, and more. The pressure left me close to burnout and reminded me of an important lesson: managing your energy is just as crucial as managing your time.

In today’s hyperconnected world, we’re bombarded with constant demands on our attention—emails, texts, social media, news cycles. As a result, we often feel drained, distracted, and overwhelmed. The challenge isn’t just being busy—it’s being distracted, constantly reacting to the next thing.

We process more data today than ever before—74 gigabytes daily, five times what we processed in 1986. In fact, we consume more information in one day than someone in 1500 would have in an entire lifetime. This constant stream of data puts us in a state of perpetual distraction, where focus and energy become scarce resources.

To regain control, I’ve adopted a "consumption diet," limiting the information I consume to protect my energy. Here’s what I do:

  • No news before 12 p.m.

I avoid starting my day with the emotional weight of current events.

  • No meetings before 10 a.m.

I reserve my mornings for focused work, not interruptions.

  • No email before 9 a.m.

I prioritize deep work before diving into my inbox.

  • No phone in the bedroom or bathroom.

Phones don’t invade my personal time or space.

  • Remove unused apps.

I streamline my phone to reduce distractions.

  • Organize newsletters.

I keep only the most valuable ones and unsubscribe from the rest.

  • Turn off notifications.

I silence my phone during focus and family time.

  • Limit social media.

I set time limits to avoid getting lost in endless scrolling.

These small adjustments have a big impact on my focus and well-being. By reducing unnecessary distractions, I’ve created space for what matters most—my work, relationships, and personal time.

In a world full of distractions, it’s easy to feel drained. But by intentionally cutting back on what we consume, we can preserve our energy and focus on what truly matters. Try implementing a consumption diet yourself and see how it transforms your day.

Protecting your energy is a practice, not a one-time fix. It’s about making choices that align with your priorities and finding balance in a noisy world.

Love this real talk about information overload! 🧠 That "no news before 12pm" rule is interesting - what made you pick that specific cutoff time? I'm always amazed at how those small boundary changes can make such a big difference in our energy levels! ⚡️

I appreciate your message, Penny. I often find myself dealing with the same challenges. Not sure of the "one" thing to remove... what do you suggest?
