Engineer’s Day: Acknowledging the Contributions of Engineers in Modern World Innovation
“Science is about knowing; engineering is about doing.”
The above stated lines were quoted by Henry Petroski, the popular American engineer, and we completely agree with his saying. Engineers play a pivotal role in shaping and designing the future of every country. The world as we see it today would never have been the same without the extraordinary contributions made by engineers. In India, the day of September 15th is devoted to celebrating the success and hardwork of all engineers around the world. On the occasion of this day, let’s take out the time to acknowledge and appreciate the significant contributions made by our engineers towards shaping our modern world.
Check out the article given below to understand the history of Indian engineers' day and how engineering and innovation have helped in modernising our world.
History of Engineers Day- Where did it all begin?
India observes Engineer's Day on September 15 as a mark of remembrance and tribute to Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya on his birth anniversary. Vishveshvarya, also known as the Father of Indian Engineering, made some enormous contributions and innovations in the field of engineering and the development of society, including the construction of dams, reservoirs, and hydro-power projects in modern India. In addition to his engineering achievements, he also played a crucial role in promoting engineering disciplines and was instrumental in establishing the Government Engineering College in Bangalore in 1917.
For the splendid contribution made by Sir MV, the government of India awarded him with the nation’s highest honor, the "Bharat Ratna’. In 1968, the Indian government designated the birthday of Sir M. Visvesvaraya- 15th September, as Engineers' Day. Since then, this day has been celebrated to honour and recognise all engineers who have contributed to building a modern and developed India and continue to do so.
Engineers' Contributions Towards the Present World
“At its heart, engineering is about using science to find creative, practical solutions. It is a noble profession.” — Queen Elizabeth II
Engineering is a field that has always stimulated innovation and ensured the continuous flow of improvements in aspects of human existence. In the present world, the majority of our services and products have some element of engineering involved in their conception at least, paving the way to long, fulfilling, and healthy lives for the people influenced by them.
Though there have been an infinite number of contributions made by engineers for the betterment of our present society, we’ve jotted down here the three critical areas in which engineering and innovation have impacted our modern life.
The modern health system has improved in several ways, all thanks to advancing machines and technologies. From synthesising new vaccines and antibiotics to creating new scanners that can detect minute changes, all of these are the byproducts of the power of engineering. All the medical advances that we’re utilizing these days would not have been achieved without the engineers who design and build the machines that make it all possible.

Another valuable contribution that engineering advancements have made to our lives is the development of transportation systems across land, sea, and air all over the world. The Mag-lev trains, self-driving electric cars, planes, and other solar energy enabled vehicles, all of these brilliant innovations comes from the minds and efforts of our engineers. Even today, finding innovative, sustainable solutions to modern day population problems is what makes engineering careers so rewarding and vital to society at every level.
Technology exists to improve the quality of our lives. It is becoming so advanced that it is now advancing at the fastest rate in the history of humanity. Engineers are at the forefront of technological development, creating new machines and algorithms to combat societal issues. Utilizing technology to combat climate change, enhance our quality of life, and bring people closer together, all of these are the milestones achieved by engineers working together.
India: Paving the Way Towards the Future of Engineering
Ever since its independence, India has come a long way in terms of engineering development and achievements. There have been many special contributions made on a global level by Indian engineering organizations, including ISRO, ICMR, IISC, IITs, IGCAR, DRDO, and many others. The nation that was once called the land of Snake charmers, is now leading every sector like Space exploration, the economy, infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, all with the help of its skilled engineers.
Even during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, which kept the entire world at a halt, the engineering will of India helped the country fight the coronavirus. India stood at the forefront and provided aid to around 90 countries by supplying vaccinations, oxygen concentrators, medical oxygen, and medical aid. It is true to say that India's engineering spirit was a significant factor in curbing the deadly Covid-19 virus.
