Enough is enough
Welcome to the Retail Week People & Leadership newsletter. This monthly update is your snapshot of the moves, news and trends defining what it means to work in retail today from the shop floor to the boardroom and everywhere in between.
The Big Story
Abuse of retail workers must end. Research published by The Retail Trust this week indicates that nearly half of those interviewed in their survey of 1,200 retail employees feel unsafe going to work. 39% are considering leaving the job or retail altogether – a figure that reduces to 17% with effective training in handling abusive customers.
Retail Week is now an official media partner of a new campaign by the trust called Respect Retail, as part of which free training sessions will be offered to retail workers aiming to equip them with the tools they need to handle difficult, abusive customers. You can find out more about the campaign and sign up for a session here.
In the same week that we published this research, Retail Week editor-in-chief Charlotte Hardie witnessed one of the many incidents of abuse directed towards store workers this week and wrote about the experience. Her piece, abruptly titled: ‘Last Sunday my daughter and I watched a shoplifter headbutt a store worker outside Sainsbury’s’, makes the point that retailers need to seek fresh ways of understanding the unacceptable pressure faced by store workers today.
She asks: “Can head office senior leaders and their colleagues genuinely say they understand how it feels to work on retail’s frontline? Not just processes, myriad demands and the relentless pace, but how it feels to be shouted at, threatened and to feel afraid?”

We have not one but two big interviews for you this month. First up is Co-op Food CEO Matt Hood, who explains what he’s got planned to bring the 161-year-old grocery brand into the future while staying true to its founding principles. And we also have the exclusive first interview with new Holland & Barrett boss Anthony Houghton who tells us all about his transformation strategy and mission “to help people live better”.

Movers and Shakers
Here are three people moves that caught our eye this month:
Boohoo: John Lyttle, formerly Primark chief operating officer, informed the board of his intention to step down as Boohoo’s CEO. Boohoo said in a statement that Lyttle would continue to work with the leadership team in the coming months to “ensure a smooth transition” with his successor.
Sports Direct: Managing director of sport at Frasers Group Ger Wright is set to leave the business after two years. She’s expected to remain on Frasers Group’s board as a non-executive director.
Inditex: Earlier this month Retail Week revealed that the Zara-owner's managing director for the UK and Ireland had stepped down and a successor had been named. After 25 years at the helm, Max Nutz is to be replaced by Pilar Losada.
