Belgian marine services company DEME, known for its expertise in offshore energy solutions, has revolutionized this process with the deployment of Nortek’s vessel-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) system. This technology provides real-time current data across the water column, enabling crews to make precise adjustments during cable installation. Such precision not only ensures the longevity of subsea cables but also enhances the overall safety and efficiency of operations.

Key Innovations for Wind Energy

The Nortek ADCP system, installed on DEME’s Viking Neptun vessel, offers unprecedented accuracy in measuring current speeds and directions at various depths. This data allows operators to account for dynamic subsea conditions, ensuring cables are laid precisely along pre-determined routes, even in challenging environments.

Previously, DEME relied on less accurate tools, such as a “fish” sensor, to gauge currents. The transition to the ADCP system marks a significant leap in accuracy and operational efficiency, enabling DEME to navigate complex seabed conditions, avoid obstacles, and optimize cable protection strategies.

Advancing Floating Offshore Wind Projects

The Viking Neptun is now set to participate in groundbreaking projects, including the Les Éoliennes Flottantes du Golfe de Lion floating wind farm in France. Floating wind technology, which unlocks wind energy potential in waters deeper than 60 meters, introduces new challenges, particularly in cable installation. Here, the ADCP system’s ability to deliver real-time, multi-depth current profiles proves indispensable.
