To the Entrepreneur Who Wants to Sell Out, but Doesn't Know How
On July 10, 2017, a man named Udoh walked into a funeral gathering and, together with a group of thugs, threatened to beat up the late woman's eldest son.
Thankfully, a group of elders rescued the day, and the burial went as planned.
His argument?
He was one of the chiefs in the clan and deserved homage from "rich" villagers.
So he attacked them at their most vulnerable moments and often made a fortune from their grief.
Sadly, his disruptive ways did not stop then.
Over the years, this Chief became notorious for disrupting funerals, beating up relatives of deceased folks, and extorting them.
He would eventually be convicted of assault, spending 14 months behind bars.
That man, Chief Dickson Udoh, was my grand uncle.
His actions did not only affect him. But like the proverbial finger dipped in oil (that dirtied the other fingers), his notorious ways rubbed off on my other uncles.
These innocent men were criticized and judged based on the actions of their clan head.
One day I had a conversation with my mum about our extended family's reputation in the village and what could be done to salvage it.
She said something I will hold dear to my heart for the rest of my life.
"Don't worry about his reputation, dear. Instead, be concerned about your pot of water."
Her words baffled me, and I could tell she saw the confusion in my eyes.
"Sweetie, reputation is like the cup we use to draw water from the earthen pot.
On the other hand, your character is the big clay pot of water.
Be more concerned with the pot's content because the cup serves no purpose without it.
My mum had a knack for speaking in idioms and seemed to derive a special joy in seeing you rack your brain to figure out what she meant.
So it wasn't until three years later that I fully understood what she meant.
She meant that if I worked on my character, my reputation would be as beautiful as I craved.
So, it all starts with who you are on the inside.
Your thoughts lead to actions; eventually, those micro-actions influence how people view you.
You cannot draw from an empty pot, so without an impeccable character, you cannot have an excellent reputation.
And this got me thinking...
Some business owners create a hot mess trying to sell to their ideal clients without first winning their trust.
To run a successful and highly profitable business, you must work on your values (because it is the foundation of your brand and all it represents).
People can smell a fake from a thousand miles away, just as they perceive when someone genuinely cares.
If you are people-centered, you will demonstrate this in your relationship with your audience.
It becomes second nature, and in no time, your dream clients will know, like, and trust you.

As Richard Branson puts it, "your brand name is only as good as your reputation."
The #1 way to nurture connections and build relationships on an emotional level is through storytelling.
When done correctly, storytelling:
For example, you can't help falling in love with The TOMS Story.
"While traveling through Argentina in 2006, TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie saw the hardships faced by children without shoes.
"This inspired him to create a for-profit business with giving at its core.
"The idea?
For every pair of shoes the company sold, a new pair would be given to a child in need.
"And with that, TOMS—short for Tomorrow's Shoes—was born."
That's it.
We see Blake as a compassionate man manifesting what he is on the inside through his shoe brand.
That compelling messaging increases his reputation and attracts his tribe.
That's it—the incredible power of a compelling narrative.
No other marketing strategy beats storytelling.
