When Olipop launched in 2018, Ben and his co-founder, David Lester, faced a big challenge: standing out in a market full of sugary sodas. They didn’t just aim to make a healthier soda; they wanted it packed with prebiotics for gut health. In their first year, they sold $852,000 worth of product, delivering each can themselves. The journey from these humble beginnings to dethroning A&W as the best-selling root beer in the U.S. seemed almost impossible.
Olipop’s success boils down to a brilliant sales strategy. They didn’t just sell a product; they marketed a healthier lifestyle choice. By understanding that consumers wanted better options without drastically changing their habits, they created flavors everyone loves. This strategy has led them to surpass $200 million in sales by simply meeting a strong consumer need.
For Goodwin, the most surreal moment came earlier this year when Olipop became the best-selling root beer, surpassing A&W. This milestone showed tremendous trust from customers willing to replace a lifelong favorite with something new and healthier. Despite their success, both Goodwin and Lester have no plans to slow down. With dozens of new iterations of healthy soda ready, they continue to aim high. “We want to take this product well beyond $1 billion [in revenue],” says Lester, emphasizing the importance of a well-thought-out and adaptable sales strategy.
