In many workplaces today, there's an unspoken but all-too-common "Cinderella Culture" — where hardworking, dedicated employees are overlooked, underappreciated, and treated unfairly by poor leadership. Sound familiar? If you’ve ever felt like the overlooked Cinderella in your company, with toxic leadership playing the role of the evil stepmother, you’re not alone.

In our modern workplace fairy tale, the stepmother symbolises the unqualified manager who’s risen to a leadership position without the necessary skills or experience. These leaders often bring along “stepsisters” — employees from their past life who are similarly lacking in skills but enjoy favouritism. Together, they create a toxic environment where nepotism and bad leadership reign supreme.

The signs of a "stepmother" manager include:

  • Playing favourites with certain employees (often underperformers)
  • Ignoring or dismissing the contributions of more capable employees
  • Encouraging office politics that fuel jealousy, gossip, and conflict
  • Lacking vision and leadership skills, creating chaos and confusion

This poor leadership not only drags down high-performing employees like Cinderella but also stunts overall team performance. Good leaders lift people up; bad leaders, like our metaphorical stepmother, create a toxic atmosphere where talent is either wasted or driven away.

However, just as in the fairy tale, there’s a time limit. For Cinderella, the magic fades at midnight. In the workplace, these opportunities can be fleeting, and timing is everything. Those who are prepared — who have been mentored and groomed by their Fairy Godmother — will make the most of these chances.

So, how can you escape the Cinderella Culture in your workplace and rise above toxic leadership?

  1. Find your Fairy Godmother: Look for mentors who can provide the guidance and opportunities you need to grow.

  3. Network outside of toxic circles: Attend events, build connections, and seek out environments where your contributions will be valued.
