The European market for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) continues to show dynamic developments in 2024, with growth in market share and notable shifts among the leading nations. Our latest data provides a deep dive into how different markets are performing and where the future opportunities lie. Here's what the numbers reveal:
Key Developments in the European BEV Market
The market share of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Europe grew from 13.2% in the first quarter to 15.5% in the third quarter of 2024, marking a +2.3 percentage point increase. Despite this progress, total BEV registrations from January to October 2024 showed a slight decline of -1.7% compared to the same period in 2023. This suggests a mix of challenges and opportunities in the market’s transition to electric mobility.
🚗 Germany:
Germany remains Europe’s largest market for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) by volume, with 311,877 registrations recorded by October 2024. However, its BEV market share reached only 14.3% in Q3, signaling modest growth and limited progress in expanding its share. This sluggish development is attributed to policy uncertainty and the slow implementation of supportive measures, which have created a less conducive environment for accelerated adoption. The absence of clear, long-term incentives, coupled with infrastructure bottlenecks, poses significant challenges to fostering faster BEV uptake.
🚗 United Kingdom:
The UK has demonstrated remarkable progress, achieving the highest BEV market share among major European countries at 21.5% in Q3. With 299,733 BEV registrations recorded this year, the UK is rapidly closing the gap with Germany while solidifying its lead over other European markets. The country’s ongoing investments in infrastructure and incentives are clearly paying off.

🚗 France:
France continues to perform well, with 237,650 BEV registrations and a robust 16.6% market share in Q3. While not growing as fast as the UK, France’s consistent performance reflects its steady commitment to electromobility.
Looking Ahead: EU CO2 Targets Will Accelerate BEV Adoption
The growth of BEV market share is expected to accelerate significantly in the coming years, driven by stricter CO2 emissions regulations set to take effect in 2025.
These upcoming regulatory changes present both a challenge and an opportunity for European markets to consolidate their leadership in the global transition to electromobility.
