European Union formally adopts PPWR - How can the industry adapt to new legislation? - Plastic industry implores EU for protection
Welcome to this week's edition of the Packaging Europe LinkedIn newsletter! Like we do every week, we're bringing you a rundown of the most important packaging stories from the past seven days.
Let's get into the stories.
The European Council has formally adopted the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, meaning it will now enter into force in EU law.
As Europe’s share of global plastics production is feared to have halved over 20 years, Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE) is among the stakeholders calling for the European Union to regulate its virgin and recycled plastic imports and address high energy costs.
Utilizing pharma-grade resins powered by Dow, LOG Pharma Primary Packaging’s barrier line claims to lower the weight of pharmaceutical bottles by up to 30% without sacrificing their water vapour transmission rate.

Our industry faces a dilemma: while packaging is still seen as a “silent seller”, new EU rules promote minimal, necessary packaging. How can businesses embrace this change and adapt to new conditions? Anna Perlina, sustainable packaging consultant at Integrity Solutions, offers a potential solution.
The EU-funded CIRCULAR FoodPack project has successfully recycled flexible plastic multilayer composites (MLCs) into food-grade polyethylene packaging using tracer-based sorting technology, water-based treatment, and solvent-based recycling.
Leipa puts a strong focus on material and energy efficiency by utilizing renewal resources and at the same time reducing the carbon footprint of our packaging concepts (where applicable) without compromising product integrity.
Our new developments must fulfill a recyclability of no less than 85% on paper-based solutions according to the German regulations for waste management and material reutilization and a minimum of 90% on mono-film solutions (PP or PE). LEIPA Flexibles develops solutions that facilitate the collection and reutilization of packaging materials.
We put an emphasis on dispersion coating technology and extrusion lamination and/or coating to improve or give high barrier properties to diverse substrates with the aim of extending the product shelf life and reducing material complexity as well as energy sufficiency with new printing technology (E-Beam).
With almost 60 years of expertise in developing paper-based and mono polymer-based materials, LEIPA Flexibles offers truly sustainable packaging solutions that meet customer needs and market regulations.
For our LEIPA ECO - D4R SOLUTIONS, designed for recycling (D4R) means that the materials and structure used can be easily recycled and reused in the production of new products. Additionally, it promotes a circular economy where materials are reused and kept in use for as long as possible, rather than being discarded after a single use.
LEIPA-ECO line is a group of LEIPA solutions, designed for 100% recycling (D4R). These solutions are produced based on paper, film (mono materials/polyolefin) or biodegradable polymer, with different barrier properties.
The focus on sustainability is not limited to our products but also on process technologies and their usage of energy and heat. That’s why LEIPA Flexibles has invested heavily in new water dispersion coating and E-Beam printing technologies with the aim of being more environmentally friendly and lowering energy consumption as E-beam systems are more efficient due to there being no need to dry inks.
