The Evolving Importance of Wellbeing in the Workplace: A Conversation with Emma Walsh and Lawrence Mitchell
In today’s rapidly changing work environment, one thing has become abundantly clear: wellbeing is no longer a nice-to-have; it’s a critical factor for a thriving workforce, Emma Walsh , CEO of Parents At Work , recently spoke with Lawrence Mitchell, CEO, APAC of Wellbeing at Work World , to reflect on the past decade and the growing importance of prioritising wellbeing. As the Wellbeing at Work Australian Summit approaches in Sydney and Melbourne, their conversation sheds light on how workplace wellbeing has shifted from a peripheral issue to a business necessity.
Wellbeing at Work: A 10-Year Journey
Lawrence looks back on the last decade of Wellbeing at Work, a global movement launched in 2014 with a vision to infuse more compassion and humanity into workplaces. Initially, the focus was largely on physical health & safety, such as offering yoga classes and fitness programs. However, the pandemic revealed the need for a broader, more holistic approach, encompassing mental, emotional, and cognitive wellbeing.
“Ten years ago, many leaders viewed wellbeing as a side issue. Today, it’s recognized as central to organisational performance. We now understand that the mind, body, heart, and spirit are interconnected, and addressing this holistically allows us to create workplaces that support true wellbeing and drive sustainable growth,” Lawrence shared.
The pandemic was a turning point in how mental health is perceived in the workplace. Pre-pandemic, mental health was often equated with mental illness. Now, there’s a greater awareness that everyone has mental health, and nurturing it is crucial—especially in times of significant change and pressure.
“The pandemic showed us that mental health impacts us all. As we adapted to rapid changes, many faced burnout and exhaustion, leading to a heightened understanding that wellbeing is not a luxury but a workplace necessity.”
Why Wellbeing Should Be a Strategic Priority
This year’s Wellbeing at Work Summit in Australia focuses on a key theme: “Making Wellbeing a Strategic Priority.” But why should it be a priority for every CEO? Lawrence explains that it’s about more than just ticking boxes—it directly ties to performance.
“Wellbeing is the other side of performance. For people to perform at their best, their wellbeing must be taken seriously. Businesses are starting to realise this, and wellbeing is evolving from a nice-to-have into a structured, measurable priority, like any other aspect of the business.”
Lawrence also highlights a shift from focusing on short-term gains to prioritising long-term, sustainable success, stressing that a healthy, engaged workforce will deliver lasting value.
