EXECUTIVE JOB SEEKERS: IT’S TRUE – YOU CAN FIND A NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK!!
But you need to be able to describe it, or you might never find it!
Alarm bells ring when I ask job seekers what their ideal next job might look like!
Most are unable to articulate it clearly.
Your response might be heavily affected by ‘maximum compromise vacillation’ - attempting to look more attractive to an extensive range of organisations – and suggesting various job titles, sectors, sizes of organisations, and geographical preferences.
You might focus more on organisational values, personal aspirations, levels of autonomy, preferred leadership style, and a lack of micro-management.
If you indicate broad-based search options, you are not helping yourself – let alone any recruiter who might have the answer!
Would your response confuse others or confirm you’re looking for a C-suite role – and not wanting to push trolleys in supermarket car parks?
IF YOU CAN’T DESCRIBE YOUR ‘NEEDLE’, HOW CAN YOU EXPECT TO FIND IT?
HOW CAN YOU EXPECT OTHERS TO HELP YOU FIND IT?

IT’S TIME TO CHANGE YOUR APPROACH!
Don’t expect others to work it out for themselves. Don’t expect them to define what you’re looking for if you can’t - or can’t be bothered to do it for them!
If you were looking for a new car, you would surely have some idea of its make, model, no of seats, fuel type, engine size/power – colour even?
Or would you happily accept an old rusty van, instead of a top-of-the-range Mercedes?
Whether it’s a new car, your next holiday, or a new home, your search would start with what you want, wouldn’t it?
YOU CAN’T FIND WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT IT IS!
AND OTHERS CAN’T HELP, IF YOU CAN’T TELL THEM WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR!
If you continue to present yourself too broadly, hoping someone will find something you might be interested in, you increase the likelihood of getting something you don’t want!
I really hope you don’t fall into the trap of job searching like a rabbit caught in headlights.
SO, IS FEAR STOPPING YOU FROM CREATING A SHOPPING LIST FOR A NEW JOB?
Please resist the temptation to ‘do what everyone else does’. Following the herd will only get you to where the herd is going – and at their speed too.
Please take the time. You deserve to give it the time, to define what your perfect next job is.
If that’s difficult to define, we need to speak soon.
DON’T DECEIVE YOURSELF – YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO GET IT WRONG.
It’s your job search and your future. You cannot afford to get it wrong.
There’s no shame if you’ve never learned the right way, but there is real concern if you continue to follow the herd in what doesn’t work.
Hoping the job search world will be kind to you risks deluding yourself.
It can be a hard, cold and lonely experience, but it's even worse when you haven’t got the basics right.
IT’S YOUR FUTURE – DOES IT MATTER TO YOU?
If now isn’t the right time – how much worse must things get before it is?
If now is the right time, we ought to speak soon.
