Exit Interview By Patrick Donegan #107

For some time, I’ve been looking for one “source” that curates modern takes on HR Tech, perspectives from the people who build it, and its impact on enterprise — something that’s tailor-made by professionals for decision-makers.

I never found it — so I decided to build it.

Every week, I’ll be sharing fresh insights on tech platforms, design, data, and the future of work — straight to your inbox.

Tech Innovation at Work

Thought leaders in the talent acquisition space are helping others use ChatGPT 🤖 to streamline and improve their hiring process. It doesn’t have to be incredibly technical, either. From building a bank of interview questions and refining said questions to layering strategy into talent search efforts with custom Boolean strings, AI chatbots are giving HR an avenue to a sort of DIY digital transformation. 🧰 Here are 12 use cases to help you understand how you can do it, too.

Simulation L&D designer Attensi has rolled out a new gamified 🎮 training simulator in the risk development and underwriting space. Their muse, London-based insurance company Hiscox, identified the need for more comprehensive training programs after experiencing a significant skills shortage in new underwriters. In just ten weeks, Attensi was able to develop a solution that not only helped new employees understand how to function in the high-stress insurance sector, 😓 but reportedly reduced errors by over 70%. Read about Attensi’s process and the implications for more accessible AR training models here.

The Changing Workplace

Last week, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy 🏛️ signed into law a landmark set of protections for temporary workers throughout the state. The legislation, known as the “Temporary Workers’ Bill of Rights,” 📜 requires businesses to provide temporary employees many of the same rights afforded to formal staff, including wages and benefits. Temporary workers also now have protections against unfair practices within the staffing firms that place them, like transportation fees and dangerously poor record-keeping. The Bill of Rights goes into effect in just 89 days, but frankly, that doesn’t seem soon enough. ⏱️ Temporary workers have long suffered unique (and illegal) treatment based on their employment status, so much so that the National Employment Law Project and Temp Worker Justice exist solely to assist people in understanding their rights and seeking recourse for illegal practices. Mistreatment is so widespread that 1 in 4 temp workers report acts of time theft, and 1 in 5 workers fail to receive important workplace training. This report offers a comprehensive overview of temporary employment in the US and offers insight into how private companies and federal legislation should redress inequities. 👈

Misgendering another person is usually an honest mistake — until it’s not. And progressive legislation in New York 🪶 is setting a precedent for classifying malicious or intentional misgendering as a form of workplace discrimination. Mandated or not, believing everyone has a right to feel safe at work should include the right to be seen and identified by one’s preferred gender identity. I’ll be honest — this is new-ish territory for me. So when I came across this guide for integrating pronouns into both culture and conversation, I was very grateful. Take a look; you’ll probably find some new tips. 👀
