It could be about making a product, managing a process, delivering a service or supplying materials – standards cover a vast range of activities.
Standards are the distilled wisdom of people with expertise in their subject matter and who know the needs of the organizations they represent – people such as manufacturers, sellers, buyers, customers, trade associations, users or regulators.

2yThere is misconception that SANS Standards are not equal to ISO Standards, this is untrue. SANS Standards can be adopted or redeveloped from ISO Standards. Like ISO Standards, SANS Standards are designed for voluntary use and do not impose any regulations. However, laws and regulations may refer to certain standards and make compliance with them compulsory. Any standard is a collective work. Committees of manufacturers, users, research organizations, government departments and consumers work together to draw up standards that evolve to meet the demands of society and technology. SABS Standards' staff act as secretaries to these committees and project manage the production of standards. Crucial to this process are 450 technical committees and subcommittees that are responsible for adopting and developing standards. At present, more than 6100 standards are maintained by Standards Division and new standards are developed every year. There is a real need for technical committee members, we need to relook the way standards are developed and need to include gender sensitive aspects that were often omitted in initial development of standards. SABS has taken on the task to include Gender into their development and adoption of standards.
