🛫✨ Exploring Operational Resilience in the Airline Industry: Navigating Critical Business Services (CBS) ✨🛫

Embarking on the journey of Operational Resilience (OR) within the airline industry is akin to preparing for a well-coordinated flight. You've got the leadership on board, objectives set, and everyone excited about the potential benefits of robust information and analysis. Now, let's fasten our seatbelts and delve into a pivotal phase: defining the Airlines Critical Business Services (CBS).

Defining the CBS is no small feat, requiring input from various areas and specialties. Much like Business Continuity (BC) programs, you find yourself telling people ‘Just because the process is not “critical” doesn’t mean it’s not important’.

Key Considerations in Defining Critical Business Services:

1. Alignment with Overall Airline Strategy:

  • Establish how each CBS aligns with the airline's overarching strategy.
  • Assess the potential impact of a crisis or disruption of the CBS and its implications for the airline's strategic objectives.
  • Leverage existing monitoring mechanisms for delivering the Airline Strategy.

2. Stakeholders Perspective:

  •  Gauge the value stakeholders place on identified Critical Business Services.
  •  Consider perspectives from customers, shareholders, the airline's board, and regulatory bodies.
  •  Evaluate the harm caused to each stakeholder if a CBS were to fail.
  •  Assign comparable values to these harms, acknowledging that not all harms may be equal, especially in an industry where physical risks can extend well beyond financial implications.

3. Rationale for Inclusion or Exclusion:

  • Provide a robust rationale for the inclusion, exclusion, or grouping of CBS.
  • Recognize the interconnectivity of most CBS and determine where to draw lines of division.
  • Explore the applicability of Board Risk Appetite statements or other Risk Reporting in guiding the selection and categorization of the CBS.

  • Use Dynamic Risk Assessment tools to adaptively determine the inclusion or exclusion of CBS, considering evolving operational landscapes.
  • Build effective Cross-Functional Collaboration across functions to ensure a comprehensive rationale that incorporates diverse insights and expertise.

In the intricate web of airline operations, the success of an OR program lies in the meticulous identification and understanding of Critical Business Services. This process not only fortifies your operational resilience but also lays the groundwork for informed decision-making in times of crisis.

Remember, the resilience of an airline isn't just about weathering storms; it's about ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted journey for all stakeholders involved. As you navigate the skies of Operational Resilience, the clarity and precision in defining Critical Business Services will be your true north. Safe travels! 🌐🌍

A Quick Note on How I Create Content for LinkedIn

As you know, I'm passionate about AI and its applications in the fields of Business Resilience, Business Continuity and Crisis Management. So, it shouldn't come as a surprise that I use AI to help draft my articles. I make sure that I normalize all protected information and follow the airlines AI policy.

Why? Well, for starters, I recognise that editing isn’t my strongest skill set. While I'm comfortable with it, AI gives me that extra edge to ensure clarity and coherence. Secondly, I write about AI, so what better way to understand its capabilities than to use it in my own work?

I value transparency, so it's crucial for you to know that although AI assists me in editing and building out concepts, I personally idealise, draft and review each article to guarantee its authenticity.
