Extra Hours that make the difference – How much Sleep is good enough?

How many of you are suffering from Insomnia? How many of you sleep well? Do you know somebody you got affected by sleeping disorders? How many of you believe exercise does wonder to your body? How many of you believe extra hours of sleep will cause wonders to your health and body and brain?

Dear friends – Extra hours make the difference

About a year back, I was shocked by the news about a suicide of one of my batch mates, leaving behind his daughter and homemaker spouse helpless. It was a big shock to nearly 500+ people who knew about him. He was a self-made man, just crossing 40. He was one of the fittest person you would see with a well-built body, aided by his National cadet corps training and strict diet. He was every smiling with a cherubic face. The reason for his decision – A depression aggravated by sleep disorientation and insomnia.

"Some people talk in their sleep. Lecturers talk while other people sleep." -  Albert Camus

Dear friends – how many of us take our sleep very lightly? Given that sleep is a very important part of our lives – taking nearly a third of our lifespan. Sleep gives the much-needed rest to a critical organ of 3 pounds the much-needed rest to rejuvenate. It is the capability of one’s brain that differentiates a genius from a dud and a superstar from an average Joe. Our brain consumes 10 times more energy than the other organs. All our thoughts, hopes, fears… Seeing, Hearing, Running etc are far more complex than the capabilities of the fastest digital computer in the world. Well over a million billion synapses store memory in our brain.

How do we keep this organ rejuvenated? Shakespeare quotes in Macbeth

Methought I heard a voice cry ‘Sleep no more!
Macbeth does murder sleep,’ the innocent sleep,
Sleep that knits up the ravell’d sleave of care,
The death of each day’s life, sore labour’s bath,
Balm of hurt minds, great nature’s second course,
Chief nourisher in life’s feast.

In Macbeth Again –

You lack the season of all natures, sleep.

In Tempest

We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep.

Sleep is such an important part of one’s lifestyle for our brain to work which is critical for a better functioning of senses, emotions, instincts, memory and for decisions made by us as human beings.

"Early to bed and early to rise probably indicates unskilled labor." -John Ciardi

One’s Consciousness depends on the normal activity of the brain.

I used to be a good quizzer during my school and college days – as I had a better memory power. As I aged, I slept less and less, that resulted in impairment of my hippocampus – resulting in less active memory cells. It is scientifically proven that our brain constantly generates new cells and remains adaptable — or “plastic” cells.

It is also a fact that having a bigger brain doesn’t mean better capability in which case, a blue whale will be the smartest living being on earth.  We also use our brain to its full capacity.  Scientifically it has been proven this fact. The brain is definitely at work even during our sleep – recharging us for the next day.

It is scientifically proven that a good night sleep increases waste clearance of brain by removal / contraction of interstitial wastes such as amyloid beta.

Coming back to sleep – people spend much of their lives asleep. Sleep is vital to survival, and it helps the nervous system function properly. Studies reveal that when animals and people fail to get enough sleep, concentration, coordination, memory, and mood suffer.

Additionally, sleep issues often affect people with psychiatric and neurological disorders. Recent studies are revealing how brain cells and chemicals work together to regulate sleep and the changes that take place in the brain when a person is sleep-deprived.

Using advanced molecular, cellular, and brain imaging technologies, researchers are exploring the activity of different brain regions during sleep, and how certain events and disorders alter sleep states. This information could lead to new treatments for sleep disorders — which affect millions worldwide — and deeper understanding of the relationship between sleep and various diseases.

Good sleep helps us have better hippocampus which means better memory, better amygdala which means better emotions (such as anger control), Better cognitive thinking, Less clouded thinking, cerebral shrinkage, slurred speech, poor decision making, and brain damage. Basically, lack of sleep totally destroys one’s ability to function well.

Conclusion

Had my friend addressed his issue sooner and sorted out, he wouldn’t have made the impaired decision putting all his near and dear ones in distress. In this past paced world, one thing we have in our control is our health, whether we let our lives SOAR or become SOUR is with us. What we need daily are a few Extra Hours That Make the Difference. Yes! friends, it is few extra hours of sleep. Be it 8 from 7 or 6 from 4 and a steady rest for better functioning of the brain.  I have made a decision to put in a few extra hours that make the difference. What is your take?

One of the must reads, kalilur.

Thought provoking post Kalilur. I was always under the impression that anything more than 8 hours sleep is laziness. ..
