Facing a layoff? Here's how you can bounce back to a career you love

From big companies like Amazon to startups like Zomato, OYO, and Hirect, almost all companies are laying off some part of their workforce. So, it becomes essential to know how to fight back or pick up the pieces in case you are going through such a situation.

Being laid off is a difficult time for any employee. It’s hard to feel like your job will ever be the same again after being let go.

Here are 7 things you can do in order to get back on your feet:

  1. Don't Panic. Stay Calm and Introspect: It's obvious to get tensed when you suddenly lose your job. But it's not a wise decision to jump into finding a new job without introspecting about what you are looking for in your opportunity.
  2. Let your resume upsell your skills: Your resume and LinkedIn profile play a crucial part in getting you a job. Thus, it's essential to update it with specialized skills, professional achievements, and any additional certifications that you have accomplished. You must also ask for recommendations to add credibility to your claims.
  3. Stay Optimistic: Staying optimistic is important, especially during a time when things are looking pretty bleak. Focus on your present situation and future prospects. Try not to dwell on the past, instead use it as a motivation for positive change and growth. Also, Prepare an optimistic reply about your layoff. As by seeing a gap in work experience, every recruiter will ask questions regarding the same. So be ready with a candid, positive response.
  4. Acquire new skills: Take this as an opportunity to upskill yourself to strengthen your resume which will help you attract better opportunities.
  5. Identify your strengths: You’re probably smart, have much experience in your field, and know what it takes to succeed in the workplace. But before you start looking for another job or taking freelance work to fill the void left by your layoff. It’s important that you identify your strengths and weakness to prepare yourself for your future endeavors.
  6. Work on your Networking: Start building connections and get to know productive people. A good network will help you find opportunities and provide you with the best advice about how to approach new employers or clients. Your network is your net worth, so don’t be afraid to get the best value out of it.
  7. Start your own Venture: You’re feeling down about the layoff and want to do something to get your mind off it. Starting a business is an excellent way to prove yourself again. You can start by looking for side jobs or freelancing, which will allow you extra income in the meantime.

Having said that, rather than taking a backlash from layoff, consider it as a new opportunity. This might be your chance to explore new career paths and skills that will help you to build a strong career ahead.
