Factors To Consider When Writing A Professional CV or An ATS Standard Resume

The first thing a recruiter will look at to determine whether you are the right candidate for the job is your Resume or CV depending on what is requested for.

A resume should bring out your unique skills, experience, education, achievements, and personality but more importantly, it should make you look like the best candidate for the Job.

In my years of experience as a CV/Resume Writer, and with the series of conversations I've had with top Recruiters, a sure way to grab the recruiter's attention is to align your resume with the Job Description.

Using a standard Resume for multiple jobs that don't align will lead to continual rejections. Ensure you customize your resume to the Job Description and add must-have skills and important skills so that your Resume can make it through the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) as well as the Recruiters' Initial screening assessment

Now that you understand the basics, let's go over the factors to be considered before creating a standard resume

1.  Using a Professional Email Address;

Most candidates still don't know the importance of using a professional email address. Using the wrong email address can be a total turn-off for Recruiters or Hiring Managers.

Using email addresses like jesuslovesme@gmail.com, Iamblessed@gmail.com, jamesdabest@email.com is totally wrong.

A professional email address includes your name and surname e.g. Oluwaseunakinola@gmail.com or oluwaseunowolabi24@gmail.com. Your email address should include your full name, this is very important.

You are applying for a professional job and your CV or Resume should communicate that, it starts with your email address

2. Objective / Summary Statement:

Statistics show that employers scan your resume for six seconds to determine if you’re a match for the job. Include a summary statement to highlight your expertise, major accomplishments, what you have to offer, or anything else that will show the employer you’re right for the job. Also, highlight here what it is you’re looking for in your next opportunity. Place this at the top where recruiters can see this first when they review your resume.

3. Skills;

Employers, Recruiters, as well as the ATS, scan resumes for relevant skills, keywords, and competencies. Make a separate section for highlighting your skill sets and place this between your summary statement and work experience. Listing your key skills, especially the ones required by the job you’re applying for will land your resume directly on the hiring manager's desk.

 Aim to list about 8-12 skills in this section and highlight hard and soft skills, tools, and technologies that you have worked on.

4. Work Experience;

List 4-8 bullet points about each position held. Don’t just list out daily duties and responsibilities, instead, demonstrate your contributions and accomplishments in the role. You can do this effectively by using power verbs such as ‘increased’, ‘generated’, ‘created’ etc. Use numbers, dollar values, and percentages wherever possible to illustrate the impact of each role held.

5. Passions;

 Share details of any extra-curricular activities, volunteer experiences, or community work you may have done. This gives the employer a holistic view of you as a person and lets your personality shine through. It could also be a differentiating factor during interviews and make you stand out among too many applicants with similar skills and competencies.
