The Fall of Unicorns: Chasing Cockroaches in the VC Universe

The Fall of Unicorns: Chasing Cockroaches in the VC Universe

I can't stop thinking about the recent collapse of Convoy, a once beacon in the startup sky backed by VCs such as Greylock, Hercules Capital and Baillie Gifford as well as billionaire investors such as Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates. This company resonates with a thud heard across the venture capital universe. A shockwave reverberating with echoes of questions - How could this Unicorn, that raised $260 million at a towering $3.8 billion valuation just 18 months ago crumble so abruptly?

In a candid revelation, Convoy’s CEO, Dan Lewis, painted a vivid picture of his being a victim of near-misses and potential M&A deals that agonizingly fell through. An ensemble of challenges, including the freight recession and waning investor appetite for late-stage unprofitable startups, spotlighted the vulnerability of this heavily funded giant.

Is it time for the venture capital industry to reassess its aspirations and strategies? The allure of the elusive ‘Unicorn’ - a billion-dollar hallmark of success, may need a rethink. Instead, should we steer our gaze towards ‘Cockroaches’? A shift in focus towards startups built resiliently, primed to endure economic ebbs and flows, and structured for sustainable growth rather than a dependency on ceaseless cycles of funding. What was Convoy on their E-round of funding? Topped with a $150 million line of credit from JP Morgan and I'm sure another Billionaire Convenience Credit Line given to Mr. Lewis personally, once he achieved that lofty financial status, when the institutions valued his company.

In the Chessboard of VC Investment, it seems like the strategy needs a recalibration. The Unicorns - though majestic and awe-inspiring, seem susceptible to the tumultuous terrains of market realities. Whereas the Cockroaches, albeit less glamorous, embody the robust resilience required to navigate the unpredictable pathways of business landscapes.

In the wake of Convoy’s closure, let us reevaluate our benchmarks of success and sustainability in venture capital. By embracing businesses that epitomize endurance and evolve with a consistent profit motive as their most important success paradigm, we may unearth ventures that stand steadfast in the face of adversities and flourish with foundational fortitude.

Jumping on my soapbox, as we venture forward, it’s imperative to state this loud for the people in the back. We need to refine our strategies, embracing a venture capital investment philosophy that prioritizes profits, sustainability, resilience, as well as genuine innovation, heralding a new chapter in the saga of venture capital success.
