In business today, people judge us immediately based on how we are dressed, before we even get to say one word. Unfair? Totally! I run my own soft skills corporate training business here in Japan. Now if we can positively influence that initial judgement of us, shouldn't we make an effort to control it? Every day I carefully choose my clothes to determine that critical first impression people will have of me, based on who my schedule says I will encounter that day. What do you do?

Know The Rule To Break The Rule: Classic Men's Wear Conventions

17.    Don’t leave the pockets unbuttoned on the rear of your trousers.  Closing them looks neater and more professional.

I had some tests at the Toranomon Hospital this morning, which went longer than expected, so I couldn't make the British Chamber event I had planned on attending. Instead, I had lunch at the Tokyo American Club in Azabudai.

In the evening I took my son, who will move back to London next year for work, to see my tailor to organise a made-to-measure business suit for him. These days made-to-measure is very reasonable compared to the off the rack prices of the major brands.

I thought I would be attending the Chamber event, so I wanted to stand out.

I chose my custom navy chalk stripe suit with notch lapels, double pleats, 35mm double cuffs, side vents, pocket flaps, and wore over the calf navy socks.

The blue shirt was from Thomas Pink London with French Cuffs, the cufflinks were dark blue, the horn collar stays were from Kirby Allison, the cobolt blue pocket square in a reverse puff from Kuska Fabrics 1936, the tie in a blue, beige and red stripe was handmade Italian Shantung silk from Rampley & Co London and tied in a Four-In-Hand knot. I like the Shantung silk ties because they bring an additional element of texture, which differentiates me from everyone else.

The silver corporate badge from Dale Carnegie, the pen was my black and gold Mont Blanc, the business card holder from Lanvin, the watch my vintage gold 24m Cartier Tank Francaise with a black nubuck alligator strap.

The high shine black shoes were Pollini Oxfords with a round toe cap.

This shot is outside my office because a client was using both the Mochizuki Room and the Whitlow Room.

This shot of the enormous X'Mas Tree was taken at the Tokyo American Club, to get us all into the holiday mood.

Basically, when tying a tie, it looks more beautiful if we make dimples, which I employ because it is an easy way to create beauty. But you don't seem to like dimples. Still, you make it look beautiful, so it is a great technique. You are a great master of tie tying.
